If it is coming from company that you have done business with and accidentally signed up for an email list, then it is NOT spam. The unsubscribe link should work, or at least be tried, assuming it is a reputable company.

If it is coming from a company that you are pretty sure you never did business with, then it is probably SPAM and you should click the "SPAM" button in your email.

Too many people click the spam button on legitimate emails and it does nothing but take time away from cleaning up actual spammers.

If you have a email with ATT yes if you leave ATT you will losses that @att.net or @sbcgloabal.net. I am pretty sure with others companies this is the same.

Yes unsubscribe works for legitimate emails. I have used it a lot for companies I no longer wanted deal or coupon codes from. As mentioned above though actual email spam is a seperate and annoying issue, which different than real spam, which is tasty.
