  • Roadtrip with child?

So the wife and I are taking a road trip up to NC in a couple months and we are taking our little girl. She will be about 18 months at the time. We have a portable DVD player and toys obviously, but does anyone else have any recommendations on what can help keep her busy/calm?

    Strap them kids in
Give 'em a little bit of vodka in a cherry coke

Yea, just mix it in something they will drink. Kind of like giving dogs pills in cheese. It helps keep them calm and quiet

See- I can't tell if you're being serious. I've heard way too many people tell me that, but hell, they don't even sell baby cough medicine anymore.

When my son was that age I typically did the bulk of the driving overnight, and he would sleep right through it, but that isn't for everyone. Most of our trips were from here out to SoCal to visit family. I would leave DFW around his bedtime and would usually make it all the way to El Paso before he would wake up for the day.

Another good tip is to plan on sitting down for meals (rather than drive through), and getting out periodically to let her run around and burn some energy. It slows down the travel time, but reduces many of the typical pains involved. Use those rest stops for brief breaks from the road. They usually have some grass to run around on, and such.

Also, make sure you have plenty of small snacks. Baby carrots, goldfish crackers, grapes, stuff like that.

It worked well for me as the driver, as well. For me, the worst part of long distance driving is overnight (as far as getting fatigued / sleepy). Putting that part first, when I was still fresh, made it much easier on me. Then, when I really start to get the fatigue (after about 10 hours or so) the sun would be coming up, which rejuvenates me. I'd stop and get breakfast, some fresh coffee, and would be good to go for another 10+ hours (my drive to CA runs about 21 hours).

I've done dallas to KCMO numerous times with my son. it's not bad, but i do keep the Ipad and use my phone as a hotspot so he can watch whatever crap is on the PBS kids app.

when they are in diapers its easy. we are potty training now. he told us he had to poop as we were cruising through raytown missouri, and lets just say it made oak cliff look like beverly hills.

                            All good advice.

Chili- overnight is a great idea, I didn't even think about that. She is a great sleeper so that would be ideal. Also sitting down for meals is a great idea.

I think the whole trip is only about 15 hours or so, so I won't really know how she's going to do until we get into it. Maybe split the trip into 2 days? And just go super easy for 2 days.

And depending on where you're going to be 10-12 hours later, starting off at night can help you avoid traffic.
