  • Freezers

The ole Montgomery ward handme down spit the bit. What would you guys say the pros and cons is between a stand up and a chest freezer. The old one was a stand up and maybe we were just spoiled but I had no problems with it at all. The chest style seems like shit would get lost.

    Thoughts, experiences?

I have an extra refrigerator in the garage. The extra fridge/freezer is a huge advantage especially around the holidays or when wet aging meat.

I have a spare refrigerator, and a chest freezer. The chest freezer is where food goes to be forgotten about. Every few months I end up digging through it and finding food I don't even remember buying.

Chest. They loose less cold when opening them and should be more energy efficient because of that. That should also keep the compressor from cycling as much and in theory give it a longer life, but most appliances are built like shit these days and don't last long. Not like my grandmother's old chest freezer from the 40's or 50's that is still running.

Chest. I have a newer one and it's great. It has four moveable racks in it so my food doesn't get lost.

I picked an upright for the very reason of lost food. And stooping waaaay over to get to the stuff on the bottom.

Oh, and don't get a frost-free freezer, as when it goes to defrost, it defrosts your food a little, too, shortening the foods lifespan.

I did the upright so I would be able to see more of the inventory. Can't personelly say one is better then the other but liked the idea better.

Definitely upright. Easier to organize and actually see/remember what you have in there. Also, it has a smaller foot print so it takes up fewer sq ft of floor space than a chest freezer of comparable size

I had a chest freezer, thought the upright would be better. At the end of the day stuff still gets lost in there and then sometimes people leave the dang door open.

I'd stick with the chest freezer. Although the one major upside is the upright gets you more space while taking up less floor space.

Spare fridge in the garage for beer and fresh deer meat to rest. Chest freezer for deer/hog meat storage as the freezer side of my side by side in the kitchen stays pretty packed. When it starts to dwendle down go to the chest and fill it up again.

Also chest freezers are easier to store bodies in, so there is that to consider.

Chest freezers are cheaper to run as they do not self defrost every 12 to 24 hours. Up right is more convinent a nd you don't have to self defrost every year. Remember, "There Ain't No Free Lunch."

My wife wants to go that route and we just might find a used one.

I have been looking for places to throw those here lately.

I started doing some measuring and I don't think I can swing a chest anyways. Worst of all i would have to listen to my wife complain about bending over to get her food in the chest style.
