Arrest Warrant Issued For 9 Year Old; You Won’t Believe Why!!

In what Police Chief Scott Haug says is the first time in his thirty years of serving in law enforcement, an arrest warrant was issued for a nine-year-old child in Port Falls, Idaho, just east of Spokane, Washington.

The reason for the issuance? The child was due in court for stealing a pack of gum and, as his relatives had no way to transport him, didn’t show up. He was then picked up by officers and taken to the Juvenile Detention Center. Haug stated that

“he was not treated like an adult, and simply given a ride to the Juvenile Detention Center. No officer wants to do this. It’s unfortunate that it got to this point,”

    adding that

“had we known it was a transportation issue, we could have gotten the child a ride to court.”

Kootenai County Prosecutor Barry McHugh released a statement early this week informing the public that the issuance of the warrant was a mistake.

“I have concluded that my office’s request to have an arrest warrant issued was a mistake under the circumstances. I regret this having taken place and will do everything in my power to avoid this type of mistake in the future.”

The boy was released from the detention facility on January 9. The case is still pending.

Simply wow! Apparently common sense is lacking severely there. A pack of gum is what, $1.25 at most? How much $$ in resources have been applied to this so far? How much $$ are they going to have to pay for the forthcoming lawsuit??

          x2!

If any of my step kids pulled that shit, they'd be pleading with the cops to take them to jail instead of coming back home.

Sure, now he’s just a little boy stealing little toys. But some day he’ll be a grown man stealing stadiums and quarries

Not at all, but that's a parenting issue, not something LEO and a DA plus judges, etc. should deal with. Like someone else said, if my kid stole something, he'd be begging for the LEO to take him. My oldest forgot a homework assignment the other day, so he copied it from a friend before class. He turned it in to the teacher and 5 minutes later came back and told her to give him a zero because he copied it (he didn't and wouldn't reveal from whom to the teacher). The teacher later asked my wife if she should let him turn it in for a 50 the next day, but we said no way. He told us about it and took a proper punishment with no resistance. It's called parenting. It's just stupid to spend tax dollars on something like this.

Your basing your thoughts on the assumption that the parents are or were going to discipline the child.

He broke the law. It's a law enforcement and court issue. Teaching them to deal with the consequences and not do it again is a parenting issue.

Wait. This is the board where everyone thinks LEO's do too much, right? Now you want the entire system funded by tax dollars, speeding tickets, etc. to use their resources to arrest, trial, and prosecute a 9 year old that stole a pack of gum? Just wanted to make sure I was still in the right place...
