  • What is all the red dust/dirt on vehicles?

My son's F150 hasn't moved since the weather turned bad, but after all the snow melted off, there is a nice layer of red dust/dirt on the truck.

Did this weather pattern pick up some Oklahoma red dirt and bring it down to Texas?

No shit. I had it all over my truck. It's mostly on my hood and on top of the cab where the snow sat.

Same with the wifes car, I suspect this unless we recieved red snow while I was asleep.

But from where? For the 7 years I've lived in southern Tarrant County, I've never seen dirt this color here.

All over our vehicles here in Forney. The only thing I can think of is the sand, but, my wifes car never went in any sand. She only drove it a mile to work and there was no sand between there and here......unless she is going places I don't know about. Motha...

My hunch is that it's due to the fact that the storm rolled in through West Texas.

I don't get to watch the news/weather on a regular basis, but I figured something like this. I just didn't realize West Texas dirt looked like this.

There is a lot of that red dirt up north of Abilene.

Snow requires dust particles to serve as nucleii for formation of the individual crystals. The source dust particles in this case were from the red soils in west Texas and western Oklahoma, transported on the northwesterly winds that preceeded the Thursday night's/Friday morning's storm.

It's not the sand from the sand trucks?

as the west texas red dirt is lifted up into the atmosphere it fell over the metroplex. I used to have a link to this but cannot find it.

It was the sand. The snow had a pink tint to it when we made a snow man.
