Petroleum geologist, oil and gas exploration, and I love the heck out of it. I work in a small hub town for the industry not a big city. If i was in a big city would easily be 120+, i am salaried at 85k(lets not even talk bonuses here). Get prospect bonus for each well drilled and backend interest or small override in every well I get drilled. Work 8-4:45 and take hour and a half lunch. Just takes 5 years of school to get here! I enjoy my smaller salary in a smaller town though. Not so hectic going to and from work, do not have to worry about stuck in traffic for hours!


That being said, this downturn we are 4 months into, small companies are usually the first to be effected when cashflow goes to zilch! People are in business to make money, i am not oblivious to the fact that security is an impossible thought in the industry.

I'm waiting to see of anything big Will happen here...I just moved to a smaller company last year to get out of halliburton and knew this was a risk so I've been trying to sock away a lot. At our quarterly meeting yesterday, all indications were that it's gonna be a challenge but we look to be positioned well to win the challenge.

hey if you can keep your job in a downturn, you have done well. Lots of good geologists on our side leave the industry each time this happens because they are unable to find work and have to move on.

saturated market. These basic industries (fire/police/healthcare) dont take a dive when the economy does. When the economy was in the dumps in 2008, there were tons of people that went back to nursing school as a second career knowing that it wont go anywhere.

Yep. Job security is awesome and for me it's a field that I really enjoy. It certainly isn't for everyone.

Finding guys hanging in trees at zero dark thirty scares the shit out of you... ask me how i know.

What do you do in the industry?

Mechanical design engineer. This is one of the reasons I push anyone I know that wants to do petroleum engineering into mechanical, electrical or computer. When there's a bust...at least your options are broader. Plus you can still get Choo Choo money if you want.
