I'm a budget analyst for a local city. I split my time between developing the budget for the upcoming fiscal year, monitoring my assigned departments to ensure they're on track to meet their goals without going over budget, and completing various research projects for our director. I find it pretty satisfying and it's a good background to have if I want to be a City Manager eventually.

Hydraulic engineering and sales. Not a bad gig in my opinion.
Agree with Strychnine, upstream is boring.

Now especially with the Dallas County bag ordinance in effect. I see worthless pieces of shit getting for $500 worth of groceries for free "EBT" bitching about a couple dollars for bags. About 50% of them do not buy the bags. Instead they'll take whole shopping carts. sometimes two and three loose just like that out the door. Fucking heathens.

As for the Midwest, there is definitely a shortage of doctors. Or, a worse shortage than the rest of the country, I should say. So yes, most of the jobs tend to pay higher there than your more popular locations. Even in Ohio, Columbus pays a good bit more than Cincinnati, so it just depends.
