As for me I sit at a desk and talk about cars over the phone. Basically I deal with customers that install our parts and figure out if they screwed them up or if we did and if we can fix it or not. It's almost impossible to get this gig though. I lucked out by having the right experience, certifications and being part of a hostile takeover. I haven't seen my boss in well over a year and only talk to him every other week or so.

    See above.

I will admit that I did get a bit of a chuckle out of that.

I paint cars. Like someone already posted though I think the question should be what do you want to do for work.

So you'll most likely need to join the military or get an engineering degree, or both!!

tell us how difficult/stringent the qualifications are!!!!!!!!!

    god bless.

I'm in IT, you can teach yourself with just a book and a test (or sometimes multiple tests) and get a certificate in 6-24 months depending on how far you take it. You made no mention of your skills, aptitude, or interests, let alone desired/needed pay range but I'll give you the starter $.02 I usually tell people.

Get the latest Cisco CCNA study guide and read it, then read it again, then take practice exams, and use a simulator like GNS3 to practice on and when you're finally ready go pay your $250 and take the test. If you pass first shot, go search for jobs that require a CCNA Cert. Given that you'd have no experience and only the Cert I'd expect to start out in more of a network support/engineering role around $40-60k/year. While you do that, get the books for the CCNP exam and repeat the process, then you'll be able to get a job near $100k within 12-24 months of getting the first job.

Then there's what I do now which is Application delivery and infrastructure architecture (F5 devices). There's a big shortage of qualified F5 Engineers and tons of jobs in the financial industry for it. It's really not hard to learn, and like Cisco and Microsoft they have certificates as well. Starting out on an F5 job would net you $60-70k but to get your foot in the door on that you'd likely need either the cert for it and/or a Cisco cert or programing experience. If you'd be interested in something like that, let me know and I can give you more details and help you avoid the mistakes I made getting where I am now.

IT stuff - you need to narrow it down a bit though.
