My first vehicle was a 1981 F150 that was a 3 speed column shift. It wasn't long after I started driving that my Dad converted it to be a floor shift.

I'm sure what you build will outlast anything you can buy, but I have trouble with the cheaper argument. Several times I've gone to build something only to realize I'm going to spend just as much as I could to buy it for. Then I re-evaluate if I want to spend the time or not. It amazes me how cheap some stuff is ... furniture is one of those things. Sure you can buy expensive furniture, but you can also find stuff at those knock-off furniture stores for pennies. Again, I know it won't last, but I don't even know how they can get it manufactured over seas, pay for materials, pay for shipping, and still make a profit on some of this stuff.

Good point...I should say comparable quality. Mostly meaning solid quality wood that can also be repaired.

Now rooms to go, ashley, and ikea are about a wash if you ignore quality.
