  • Awesome places/things to do in Texas

Since we do seem to be lacking in content maybe this will bring up some posts.

For me I really like beer and I don't mean Bud Light Lime. Texas is full of great local breweries and most of them do tours regularly. By far my favorite one to visit is Jester King. It's just outside of Austin and is on an old horse ranch. Tons of acreage, lots of picnic tables, fire pits, etc.. That and they make the most sought out beer in the state. Ron Extract usually gives the tours personally, he's kind of a mad scientist looking guy that isn't scared to try anything. You can bring your dogs, kids, whatever and it doesn't cost anything unless you want to drink.

After that would be St. Arnold's in Houston. It's basically a gigantic beer hall in downtown Houston. They are the biggest independent brewery in the state and kind of invented the concept of tours/tastings.

Then you have Revolver in Granbury. Their brewer/owner was a head brewer at Sam Adams for a long time. He had some investors and land available so he moved back to Texas and opened his own place. It's on a developed well site that was never used so it's very flat but laid out like a ranch.

Obviously there are tons of other breweries around but these 3 are way more casual than the others and I'm a fan of pretty much everything they produce.

After the beer stuff I really enjoy going to Lockhart for some great BBQ. Visiting Gruene and seeing a show at the Hall there and of course if in the area Cheatham St Warehouse is worth a visit just for the history. It's a dump but it's where George Strait got his start.

Perdanales Brewing south of Fredricksburg and Rebecca Creek/Enchanted Rock in San Antonio do good tours as well. Next on my list is Big Bend Brewing in Alpine.

I've been wanting to check out Garrison Brothers Distillery for a while, but haven't made it out there.

A few places out west that are cool to visit.
    Balmorhea State Park
McDonald's Observatory in Fort Davis (stay at the Hotel Limpia)Lots of good roads to drive in the area with a sports car
    The original Reata in Alpine
    Prada Store outside of Marfa
    Starlight Theater/ghost town in Terlingua

I meant to hit Ranger Creek while in San Antonio but never made it. Their distillery seems to be doing pretty good. I went to Balcones on Monday, not much of a tourist experience.

Enchanted Rock is pretty neat. The TPWD fish hatchery in Athens is a neat place if you are into things lije zoo's as is Moody Gardens in Galveston.

If you like fishing there are several good small lakes to fish up in the LBJ Grasslands just past Decatur. Just stop and chat with the Forest Rangers at the station and they can give you an idea of which ones to hit up. Black Creek or Clear Lake are the ones we usually went to.

This is one of the best kept little gems in the Fort Worth area. The International Exotic Animal Sanctuary right up 287 past Haslet. They have tigers, lions and a ton of bears (if a tornado hits that place all the locals will have fun with those animals running around). Its a non profit so they dont charge you per se but they do suggest a $20 "donation" from adults. I went there a couple months ago and its really cool, better than a zoo IMO. You go at certain times of day and an intern gives you a tour of the facility and you get pretty close to the animals. They also teach you about each animal, how they feed them, what they feed them, etc.

Also if you like fishing or eating fish they have started stocking trout in the local ponds/lakes/rivers. Take your young one or yourself out there, use a light pole, light line and a castmaster silver lure and bring in dinner! here is the link for locations and stocking schedule

DFW airport is centrally located in the metroplex. From there you can get to all kinds of awesome places.

Just take the back roads vs 35/45/20/30 across this state, lots of cool things pop up to stop and check out.

I used to love driving from College Station to Corpus and taking different roads each time to check out south east Texas. I usually get off 35 (due to the clusterfuck it's become) when heading to Austin or Corpus and find a few roads east or west that run parrallel and check out the local goods in the small towns along the way.

I'm not saying I didn't spend a few nights in La Grange on those trips home from College Station...

How long since you've been? I go camping up there a few times a year, and the past two years, all of the lakes and ponds have been really low, and most of the creeks weren't running at all. I used to have pretty good luck out there, but not lately. Haven't been since February or March, though. Plan on going soon. I go for the camping, mainly, and don't fish much anymore.

Has anyone checked out the Caddo Grasslands?

Spend the extra 40 minutes and go through "cave" in Enchanted Rock.
