I was just checking. My buddy that I share a shop with has a dealers licence, and I frequently take one of the cars on the lot on a parts/food run when Im up there on the weekends. Keeps the fluids moving and the battery charged. Im trying to figure out how IM abusing the system.
Technically you are servicing the vehicle right? Not really what I am talking about. I am talking about the guys rolling around for weeks or more just driving the car, or using a dealers tag as registration just so they don't have to register or inspect the car.

Now that's a piss poor attitude. You have the time, use it. I am one guy, but I have trained more then a few guys. Any fucking hint of prejudice, profiling or breaking it off in anyone, unleashes a little rage in me. Bust a U on a car because it looks like a good stop, and I will hand you your ass. I would hate to think that I was trying to make it, and driving the best I could afford, but being fucked with by LE because my car did not fit their standards. I will admit, over the years, not every administrator agrees with my approach but for the most part they have not intervened in my discretion or policing style. With the lack of complaints against me, even with reasonable activity, you would think they would realize that I am probably very much what the community likes in a officer. 13 years and I have never had to pepper, asp, or taze anyone. I have the gift of gab and can generally get people to realize they are about to make a really bad decision. My general feeling on striking anyone is they are probably going to want to hit me back, so understanding is the key. I don't show up and do things because I can, I do things because it is what a reasonable and prudent person would do. So get off your ass and put the toothpaste back in the tube!

You're not the judge. Cite them, and be about your business. I know they tell you guys that hoodrats rolling around like that are a great target to search, but this kid didn't use simple judgement. He was ready to make a career bust on this one. A hoodrat rolling around forever on dealer tags still isn't something that warrants a beatdown, though.

I fully agree he should run for office. Ge could presume he was going to lose, and use the elections to speak truth to power.

Not once did I say that guy deserved a beat down or to be arrested. Also no that is not how we are trained, nor is it the norm. I do not use the whole dealer tag thing as PC to stop. I have usually stopped someone for something else and it comes up. Not really during the week though when normal business is being conducted but say 2am, or weekends, I might inquire after the stop.

In high school a good friend had a car lot with his dad. It was the family business. He had metal dealer plates on every car he drove and would change cars every month or two as the lot bought them and sold them. We had more than one dipshit cop who thought he had solved the crime of the century by pulling us over because of the dealer plates. Most of them turned out to be idiots who had no clue what they were talking about.

If he pulled over every pile of shit vehicle with a temp tag in DFW, he'd clean the streets. Temp tags on older, crappier hoop rides screams irrisponsible shit bag.

If you're going to ride dirty, you better have your shit straight and paperwork in hand, playa. Us upstanding folk don't want to share the road with dickbags. One less car on the road is a beautiful thing.

With that said, this cop is a complete moron and the victim deserves an apology on his fat check.

Under pure technicality of the law, a food run is considered abuse with an agent tag. I've been out trying to get the monitors to reset and decided that I was hungry, didn't think much about it since I had my OBD scanner in the car with me.

Quick rundown of the dealer plates.

Agent tag exempts the vehicle from inspection. You can only take the car for official business of the car lot. Be it inspection, parts house, resetting monitors, etc. You MUST be an employee of the lot and you should have the tag in your name.

Vehicle specific tags are used for test drives. The vehicle must be inspected to use this tag. Anyone can test drive the vehicle legally if it has this tag on it.

Metal dealer plates are essentially registration stickers that can be transferred from car to car. They allow the vehicle to be driven by an employee of the car lot for any reason, personal or not. The vehicle must be inspected.

technically speaking, they are on for sale vehicles, so would have a vehicle specific tag on the back.
