Al.com reported that officer William Stacy made contact with the suspect in the parking lot of a grocery store parking lot recently in Tarrant, Alabama.
The elderly woman explained to the officer that she was stealing the eggs for her hungry children.
“I felt like I needed to do more than just leave it alone, so I went in the store and bought the eggs for her and gave them to her,” Stacy said.
The officer said this incident was not about shoplifting. He said he didn’t want her grandchildren to go hungry. So he brought the groceries to her house himself.
The grandmother said she was originally afraid she was going to jail. But now, she calls the officer one of God’s angels.
“He came to my rescue and he helped me and my family,” she said.
The officer maintains that he was doing his job.
“We do have heart and we do care about the public … We’re here to protect and serve. That’s what we do.”
