  • Garage insulation and heating?

Well, it's starting to get cold... And while I can weld in 100deg weather with multiple layers of clothing, I'm a bitch when it gets cold. Doing more and more work out in the garage I need to do something about the garage doors and also heating the garage. Only electric in the house, no gas. What have some of yall done to insulate and heat your garages?

    Saw this on HD's website:

If you have bare doors you can buy foam bats to fill in the panels for some insulation. when my mom had the garage doors replaced at her house she opted for the insulated doors (garage faces southwest) and it made a huge difference. that on top of a couple of inches of spray insulation added to the little bit they cover the attic with (usually it's less than the living space has) made a huge difference.

I didnt know they sold that in a kit, I have just bought the 4x8 sheets and cut to fit in the last house and the current house. It cheap and helps but do you have a good seal around the garage door as well?

Those foam door insulation inserts will help, but not if it's not properly weather-stripped around the door. Is there a room above your garage? If not, the ceiling likely isn't insulated and you would lose a lot of heat that way. IMO, I would make sure the door has good weather-stripping around it, insulate it with those foam inserts, and get a space heater or two, and call it good.

Cut to fit the 4'x8' sheets and liquid nails to attach to the door skin. I used 3/4"and 1/2" stacked in the doors.

          Insulate above the garage.

Ductless split unit design HVAC. Home Depot carries them. I warm it up to 72* and go work in shorts and a t-shirt in my garage in the dead of winter.
Fuck you. We're going to Costco.

My dad had someone come out and blow in this thick foam. Ran about $2.5K, but his shop is huge. All he needs is a propane heater. I have a two car garage with zip for insulation, but a wood burning stove. It can be snowing outside and I will sweating in there.

Wood burning stove, should have thought of that. I have tons of wood to burn.

And ya, I'll need to weather strip both doors, liquid nails some insulation to doors, and roll out some insulation top side.

No glue is needed if you leave them a inch long and fold/pop them in. No glue and no issues with mine.

Same here....used the rigid insulation cut a little large to fit snug and then secured with HVAC duct(foil) tape around all edges, no liquid nails was needed.

That is what I did. Unfortunately, my garage walls have no insulation and there is no insulation above. I've got an electric heater and one of those heaters that attaches to the top of a propane bottle. They work well, despite the lack of insulation.

i never understood why they don't put insulation above the garage. It is still a part of the house.

i am going to look into that kit for the door. how do you guys cover the sides? where the door tracks meets the wall?

I did the insulation on mine and it does make a huge difference.
I also used the HVAC tape, but I didn't post a pic.

This summer I put in the radiant barrier metallic stuff on the door. Tm I should have the styrofoam backing for it from Lowes. Anyone done this and have tips for keeping it secure and not popping out like the stuff in now?

I also got another roll of that foil and double wrapped my water heater which is in the garage.

The weather stripping goes on the outside of the door, not the inside. At least that's how I've seen it done on all the insulated garages I've ever seen.

This is making me want to go home and clean out the garage and get to work, lol.
