  • Layoffs.......

Well, being in aviation I think it just kind of comes with the territory. The company I work for has rolled out a voluntary separation offer to all employees in hopes that enough people take it so they can avoid having to actually lay people off. They are being tight lipped about the amount of people they need gone as well. The offer is...

4 weeks of pay + 2 weeks for every year of service.

4 weeks of cobra ins. premiums + 2 weeks for every year worked.

Christmas bonus + 401k profit sharing for this year's results.

    Still eligible for rehire.

    Separation Date = December 31.

I'm really torn on what I should do. Take the offer or wait it out and possibly be cut with nothing sometime early next year. I have been there 7 years almost to the day. The place is not union and we have been informed that if cuts have to be made it will be based on attitude, performance, and other variables like that. Basically someone's opinion of you. I am not scared about that at all. I feel like I do my job well. I have however switched over to the quality control side within the last year. I still do mechanical work but that's not my primary function any longer. I only mention this because I would not consider any of my coworkers in my new dept to be below me as far as performance. If anything we are all about the same except they have more experience with a few things I am still learning. Basically I am the low man on the pole even though my overall knowledge base is higher than most of theirs because I have worked on both sides and none of them have.

I'd take it. 18 weeks off ain't bad, especially if you think it's a decent chance of getting laid off anyway.

Take it. Find another job in the same market fast so you can beat your peers to them. Enjoy the severance.
Fuck you. We're going to Costco.

Shit. As soon as they announced that I would have been on a job hunt assuming everyone else was, also.

I have been looking for sure, nobody seems to be hiring right now around the holidays. Not a huge problem since I will be paid through the end of the year though. But basically as of Jan 1st. I am on the clock officially. I figure with what I have in savings and this $$$ that I could at the worst live for 7 months without working before things started to be defaulted on. That's not the idea though. The idea is to find work asap and pocket as much as possible.

I have no idea what the chances of being laid off are if I don't take the deal. I really dont want to leave it in someone else's hands though.

I took a voluntary layoff from National Semiconductor and they ended up closing their doors a few years back. Not sure if the people who stuck around got any kind of severance. I would take it and find a company that isn't hurting. You might get a bump in salary with your experience, and raises will likely be anemic with the company you're with if they are letting people go to cut costs..

I would take that deal if HP offered it. That would be over 20wks of pay. Then I could start working at VMware...

Raises this year were about 1/4 of what they were in all previous years I have been there. Christmas bonus is looking to be about 1/3 what it has always been as well. Raises this next year will be non existent in my opinion. How could they be decent if they are letting people go....

Not officially yet, they are asking people to leave with an incentive for now. They have over staffed the place and it's obvious. With aircraft orders not as strong as in previous years we don't need all these people.

We're starting to get ours now.. AA has a bunch ordered. I believe they are going to replace the remainder of the MD-80's and the early 757"s

I would take it but keep in mind that if oil keeps going where it is headed there are going to be a lot of people unemployed very soon. I would try to get somewhere fast.
