  • Gas Powered 4 Wheelers for kids

My son has outgrown his battery powered "Razr" and I want to get him a gas powered 4 Wheeler for Christmas. He's 5 years old and drives better than my wife.

Does anyone have any feedback on certain brands or models, anything to keep an eye out for or stay away from?

I don't mind spending a little money to get something good.

I found a 2003 PW50 with training wheels for fifty bucks that needed a top end, did that, new plastic, and it looks/runs like new. I'm in it for 300 for a Christmas gift instead of the 1400 they run new.

Dirt bikes are far safer and result in less accidents than atvs, they force the kid to learn fundamentals.

Meh. They're cheap, and work well enough to use as entry level. They're a pain to work on, and find parts for. That said, I think they're a good option. Buy one, let the kid ride it for a while and decide if it's something he/she likes. If so, then step up to a real 4 wheeler.

You can get a Yamaha Raptor 80 for around $800. If you go Chinese, I'd only buy a Tao Tao or Sunl. Those are probably the easiest to get parts for. I also don't recommend any jumping of the knock offs. The Sunl has worked perfectly for my daughter. I think I'm going to get her a Raptor 90 for her birthday in December.

I echo the dirtbike thoughts, though. Unfortunately my daughter is being stubborn about the dirtbike thing.

IMHO, a kid on a 4 wheeler is a disaster waiting to happen. He hasn't had to learn anything about balance, position, limits, etc., so it's only a matter of time until serious injury occurs. And any wreck is made that much worse when a trailer is involved. One thing on an electric toy, another on a gas powered vehicle.

If I ever get free time I'll clean the carb on this thing. You'll need to buy a new wheel, and a tire or two. Daddy had an uh oh moment on the kid's go kart and smacked the shit out of a curb.

Plus, if you start him on dirtbikes now, he may be the next Ricky Carmichael, who knows. Then you can retire when he's 18 and turning pro and just be his manager.
