  • Got My Truck Broken Into

Didn't realize till yesterday that my old truck got broken into sometime Saturday night. Took my backpack with all my electronics plus some other expensive stuff. I know I shouldn't have left my stuff in there but didn't have time to head home and drop it off. The stuff was actually hidden under some of the mess in my back seat. I have full coverage auto insurance, will they cover all my belongings that were stolen?

Yup, anything that wasn't "permanently attached to the vehicle" (depending upon coverage, but this is typical).

No. You will have to file a claim with your homeowners insurance.

Check the policy of the guy that burglarized you first.

I always thought stuff on the car from the factory was covered under car insurance and personal items in the car was covered under home owners. Also, you would have to provide proof such as receipts of the personal items in question. True/False?

Thanks fellas. I'll contact my home owners insurance and see what they say.

Was this from your driveway? Sucks either way. I just went through this with my truck so +1 on the personal belongings being claimed in your home owners insurance.

What sucked in my case is that I'd have to pay the 1% deductible. I asked my agent who in the hell carries 1% worth of personal belongings in their vehicle...

EDIT*** I just read it again and saw that it wasn't at your house....where did this happen at?

Truck was locked. They pushed in the key hole on my passenger door. Just a empty hole there now. They took at least 5K worth of stuff. I've should have known better but wasn't thinking straight. Was in a hurry and figured it would be ok. My truck is old, dirty and nothing special.

yeah...some neighborhood shitheads made the rounds last night here in Red Oak as well..hit my truck and a few others on our block and I assume the other streets around us. Got in around 11pm last night and left the alarm in valet mode but I did lock the doors. Somehow they got the drivers side door open and went thru my center console stealing all the dimes and quarters (left the nickels), stole an old pocket knife I had, and stole a couple of screwdrivers and a small crescent wrench I carry in the drivers side door pocket. Rifled thru the glovebox but nothing missing (they did find a box of Hornady Critical Defense .40 JHP and I'm hoping they decided at that point they should move on). I am not happy.

Your home insurance or renters insurance would cover off premises personal property. Keep in mind depreciation of the personal property, deductible and how the claim could impact your premiums for the next 3-5 years. Taking all of that into consideration, you can determine what the best route to filing a claim would be.
