  • Thoughts: future roommate

Soooo... i'm bored and feel like talking about what's on my mind. Fuck, i'm old.

I've been moved out since I was about 18 and last year or so contracted on a house. I decided not to fully go through with it and ended up crashing at my parent's temporarily. I've been giving them rent money which I know helps them since neither of them work, but at the same time i'm 26 now and definitely don't enjoy living here, minus the good food.

My buddy that I went to high school with wants me to move in to his house. He acquired the house as his dad recently got re-married and ended up moving north to live with his wife. Not only did he move, but he just straight up said peace the fuck out and left. He took only a couple things, but mainly it was clothes.

So, my buddy acquired this house and he has no idea what it takes to be a landlord. He is kind of messy, is not handy at all, and pretty damn lazy.

He's in a bind since his most recent roommate moved out to live with his girlfriend of 2 months, brilliant, but he says he wants to start a family, lol. It'll be hard to start a family on 20 bucks a shift. Anyways, this dumb ass decided that he would start removing the wallpaper off the wall and got about half way done, then decided to move out and left the mess. So, if I want to move in i'd have to finish removing the wallpaper, fix the holes in the wall, paint the room, clean the carpets, move all the old furniture out of the room, and then haul a bunch of furniture to the dump.

In my opinion, this work should be done by the landlord and the room should be ready to go for the tenant. The bills aren't very much, but I still don't feel like I should have to do all that work before even moving my stuff in and I for sure don't want to live in some shitty ass room.

I told him to get to work on the rooms, but he lacks motivation and says he doesn't have money for paint or anything. Should I leave 'em high and dry or what? I mean, it's a buddy of mine, just pisses me off the more I think about it.

I wouldn't do crap. You're going to fix up his house for him so that you can move in to it and pay him rent? Retarded.

If it bothers you NOW, just think how much it will bother you if you move in.

Should be done by the landlord, but if he is your "friend" help him out and do it yourself. Then deduct the cost off the first months rent. lol

If you do the work, make sure that the first 6 months (at least) are completely free of charge for you.

Yea, that's what i'm thinking. I'm pretty much paying him for me to do a ton of work.

At the same time, I refuse to live in a shitty ass room with fucked up walls and what not.

It would probably be better for me to fix the shit, or get bent. I mean truly his old man is the landlord, so if my buddy is strapped for money and can't get the house in a fixed condition, then he should go to him for money, so he can get some rent money from people. (comma abuse)

Yea, I mean once it was done and i'm moved in i'd be okay. I just like to complain about shit beforehand!

Yea, I already discussed that with him and he doesn't seem to be budging on that idea.

Logically, no rent for the first month or so would do him no harm since he currently has no roommates and then it locks in future money coming to him from me. Though, he doesn't quite see it logically.

Yea, I just really hate apartments. Working from home and dealing with people above you stomping around and shit is so annoying. The bills over here would be only 500 all bills paid, so it's pretty damn cheap.

I mean 6 months is a lot of free rent, I wouldn't be complaining if it was even one month, for the labor and also the cost of paint and what not.

I don't see how someone would assume he's going to get roommates in the house when the rooms are a disaster.

Does he have anyone else possibly lined up? If not, tell him you are not moving in unless he cleans the shit. OR tell him you will do it for first months free rent.

Both should motivate him enough to start doing something. If they don't tell him you have someone else on the list you may move in with and that you don't mind helping him out if he helps himself and get your room ready.

LOL, are you seriously even considering this? He doesn't even want to take some rent off for you fixing his busted ass room? Tell him to get the fuck outta here..

No, not at all. You know Matt, there is no way he could possibly fix a wall or paint walls, lol.

I've already mentioned that free rent thing and he tries to dismiss it. I should probably just tell him to fuck off. It's either he gets roommates or his dad flies down to get the house ready to sell, but he won't get any roommates the way things are now.

Yea, I mean the only reason i'm considering is because he is a buddy of mine. If it was someone I didn't know i'd be long gone. I'll talk to him more today about the costs of me doing all the work, clearing all the old furniture out of the rooms, and using my truck to haul shit to dump.

He is not the sharpest tool in the shed. I would dumb it down to him, one month rent for me fixing the repairs = steady income after that. If not = no income for several months. 1 month > several months.

You can't help someone who doesn't want to help themselves. If it helps, tell him that equals no WoW and video games. See if that hits a hard spot.
