  • Just had a Red Dawn flashback

So I live near the Dallas Executive Airport (Redbird) and was outside cutting the grass a little while ago when I heard a big helicopter approaching. Normally this isn't unusual as I see Chinooks flying by all the time but as it got closer I looked up and it was an Mi-24 Hind which caught my attention. Been seeing a lot of old war birds flying by lately since the Texas Commemorative Air Force moved to the airport (I'm guessing) recently including a WW2 bomber a few weeks back.

Just read in the air show thread that they had a Hind there so I'm guessing it's the same aircraft. After a quick Google search I see that there is a Cold War Air Museum in Lancaster that it must have been heading to. I really need to keep my phone handy on me to take a pic next time I see something interesting like that flying over and need to take my nephews out to these museums sometimes soon to check out some history. Anyway, thought it was pretty cool seeing it flying over my house.

I saw that aircraft at the show this weekend and the starboard wing had a pretty decent sized dent on the back near the rocket pod. So I'm thinking to myself how the hell does a helicopter get a dent in it? That was the dirtiest beat to shit looking machine out there and I was actually wondering if it even flew. Russians...

All of their stuff comes out of the factory beat to shit and dirty. I think they do it on purpose. I dont know how they get away with flying that shit here either. None of it looks airworthy.

While in the service we had a couple of Mig 29's at the German base I was stationed at. I could have sworn they went to the local scrap yard to build those planes. No piece of aluminum was the same pattern.

I will have to look it up but weren't the helicopters in the original movie just converted/modified Pumas? Something a hollywood group built and for some reason I think it was owned by Clint Eastwood at the time?

Maybe I am just getting old and getting more stories crossed.....off to google.

You are correct. They were AS330 Pumas.
