  • F*ck Canada, eh?

Looks like they're having a little excitement today.

An attack broke out today on Parliament Hill in Ottawa. A soldier was shot at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and gunfire rang out inside Centre Block.

Chaos has broken out in downtown Ottawa and a Canadian soldier wounded following a series of shootings on and around Parliament Hill.

The mayhem started when a uniformed soldier standing guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was shot and wounded by an assailant who is believed to have hopped out of a Toyota Corolla. CPR was performed on the soldier and he has been transported to hospital by ambulance. CBC reports that the soldier is a reservist who is serving in Hamilton from the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders of Canada.

Gunfire later broke out inside Parliament Hill's Centre Block, where one gunman was confirmed killed, reportedly by House of Commons Sgt.-at-Arms Kevin Vickers. However, police say there are "numerous" shooters involved. A reporter with the Globe and Mail captured the moment in this gripping video:

The shooting then continued near Rideau Centre Mall, a shopping centre near Parliament Hill. It is in "full lock down until further notice," and several embassies and legislative buildings around the country have also boosted security.

CBC reports that all military bases in Canada are currently on heightened security, in the interest of the safety of the men and women working at them. Buildings throughout Ottawa's downtown core are also under lockdown.

Reuters is reporting that an Ottawa hospital is treating three patients, two in stable condition. Their identities are not yet known.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper is safe and off Parliament Hill. He has cancelled a planned Toronto meeting with Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai, who was to be named an honourary Canadian citizen. Harper will make a statement on the attack later today.

The situation is still developing. Updates will follow.

The soldier who was shot has died according to the news, that sucks. Shows how easy it is to shut down a city with a few guns and no one to stop them.

Notice how the news articles don't seem to have any sensationalism or baseless presumptions about the types of weapons, assault rifles, automatics, etc. And what shooting doesn't have initial reports of multiple shooters even though that almost never happens?

I heard a disgruntled website administrator did it.

                And RIP to the soldier.

LOL. I just saw some crazy bitch on FB talking about how "people from Africa and Brazil shouldn't be allowed into the country because they're bringing ebola with them."

I was at the US Consulate in Montreal this morning, I'm glad this didn't impact what I needed to do.

Not true- Canadians own nearly as many guns per capita as those of us in the USA. Any Canadian who passes a background check, can buy a gun - but it does have to be registered.

It's a very weird system. They have more freedoms than we do in some respects, and far less in others. But the US has 3 times more guns than Canada per capita. The United states is at about 1 guns per citizen (it's far likely much more than this, but these are estimates), no other country comes close to that.
