      The exact phrasing was, "...retired as a lieutenant after serving for over a decade."
      So, my guess is prior enlisted, then possibly medically retired.

            Stars and Stripes says veteran, not retired. I know it's possible but not the norm. Of course when it comes to the Army there are always 100 different ways to do everything and 98% of them are wrong.
