I love my Ram. My only complaint has been the MDS, but you can deactivate it easily. It drones at certain speeds, so I turn it off when I get in the truck. 41,000 miles, no issues at all. Insane amount of storage, more power than I need, and rides great. My father has around 85,000 miles on his, with no complaints or shop visits. The outlet in the dash is VERY handy. Ram won truck of the year 13/14 back to back, something no other manufacturer has done. Don't listen to these window lickers talking shit about them. Not a single one has any experience with the new Gen.
I don't like the interior on the new Silverado, and the F-150 ride was too rough for me. I really, really love this damn truck.
'09-10 have the 5.4 with 6 speed transmission. If the price difference between a ford with the 5.4 vs. an '11 and up with a 5.0 I'd have no qualms buying another 5.4. Mine has been good to me. I don't think the prices will be drastically different. I'd get the 5.0 if it's close.
The two piece sparkplug issue was corrected on trucks built after November '07.
My experience with Rams is from '05 so I can't say anything on the new ones.
Just got out of my buddies '14 Laramie. It's pretty damn nice. My dad bought a 11 f150 with the 5.0 last week and you can't go wrong there either. You need to go drive both of them before you buy. That Ram would be hard to pass up.
I know this may not help but just traded my 2012 F150 2wd 5.0 for a 2014 Ram 2500 4x4 loved the F150 it just would not pull my small 5000lb travel trailer very well. But for a daily driver hands down a great truck. My Ram 2500 gets better fuel economy than my F150 did but diesel fuel cost is higher per gallon.

What gears did you have? Even with 3.31 gears that truck is designed to pull 8000 pounds.
I haven't been in the newer Ram gassers, but the diesel could never possibly be an option for me. They are built for women and guys with no shoulders. I literally have to lean over the center console to close the door, and trying to sit up straight to drive is impossible. The B pillar is firmly in my shoulder. WTF? Headroom sucks, too.
Anyway, I can only imagine it's the same or worse with the 1500.
And yes, I'm a giant, but my old F250 is plenty roomy.
I test drove a RCSB Ford STX 5.0 and RCSB Chevy 5.3 before deciding on my Ram Express. The ride quality (due to coils) and power easily bested both of them. I personally like the Ram interior. And since mine has the trailer tow group package, it's pretty loaded. These 4 gen Rams are actually good trucks. The new Eagle 5.7 Hemi and 65RFE are pretty solid performers. I recently towed 5,500lbs. through the Ozarks and never saw the trans temp get above 170 No hint of strain on some big grades.
My only two gripes are MDS and gas mileage. I get 20-21 hwy and about 14 city. Fortunately, the MDS is defeat-able by either selecting tow/haul or using electric range select mode.
The only mods I've done to my truck are air bags and a tonneua cover. Other than that I just drive it and change the oil. No problems after two years .
