Can you have a chase freedom and a chase sapphire at the same time? Or would it be an upgrade?

Yes, I have both... I use the freedom card in the bonus categories each quarter, and sapphire for everything else. Also I prefer sapphire for travel as it has better travel protection, and no fees for foreign transactions.

If I were going to only use one, I would go with the sapphire, but I have a good size credit limit on the freedom card with no annual fee so might as well keep it open.

I have the Citi AA card as well. We go on a vacation at least once a year and the miles definitely helps with that cost. I got the Platinum as well, getting one checked bag "free" per person with that is paid for after one trip.

I have had a Capital One Venture Visa for several years. A little over a year ago we used miles to pay for a Mediterranean cruise and one of the airfares. We moved two checking accounts over to Capital One around that same time and with all the bonus miles for that we are back up to almost 180k miles. Haven't ever carried a balance over month to month so not a penny of interest paid. Very nice to take a big vacation every few years on miles. I thought about an airline card but didn't want to be tied to one airline and didn't care for some of the booking restrictions.

I just have a capital one green cash card and a chase freedom. Both work well and seem like all they want to do is up my limit.
