  • Career aspirations?

What were and are your career aspirations? Mine have evolved a lot since the time I left 6th grade. Here's the progression of my aspirations as well as my current state:

Baseball player-->plastic surgeon (too much school) ---> engineer --> (I'm currently between sr engineer and PM) project manager ---> technical director ---> VP of technology

My ultimate dream job would be a race car driver (F1/indy), but I'm too old to start that as a career now.

    Second would be racecar engineer/designer.

If I had it to do over again I would be a surgeon or start karting early (had I not grown up without money)

I always wanted to be an engineer growing up but not going to college that was put on hold for now. Im currently working on an oil rig and am busting my ass to one day be a driller and hopefully/eventually be a toolpusher. Don't like the work but I cant argue with the money.

If I had it to do all over again I would've gone to law school.

Yep. I just hate school. I started out wanting to play violin for a large symphony of some sort, then I wanted to be a chemist. Then I realized I only liked playing the violin casually, and I hate chemistry. Now I am in the IT field trying to train up and work my way up. I'd like to be a consultant somewhere, or even a project manager for a large tech company/firm.

I started college with no idea what I wanted to do. I wanted to be a lawyer at a young age, but due to being ADD, and not knowing it until an adult age, I couldn't stand school or studying, and knew that law school would never work.

I've been in IT for 20ish years. Computers were easy for me, understanding general troubleshooting and taking it to a more complex level was like making a sandwich for me. I finally went back to school and finished my bachelors and I'm now working on my MBA.

My end goal would be to be in Senior Leadership, Director or above, for a Fortune 100 company. I don't think I want to go much higher than that, because I enjoy my time at home with the wife and friends and my weekends.

I've owned my own business, three times. Two small IT outsourcing companies and a T Shirt business. I wasn't happy with any of them due to having to rely on someone else for sales since I'm not the sales type at all. I prefer leading people in a large organization where I know there is an opportunity for growth and a stable check for the most part.

Cop or astronaut. I don't care for heights and mathematics ate my lunch so that narrowed it down!

Starting out, I just wanted to make a living being an artist. 15 years of graphic design later, I'm the CEO of an ad agency. It's weird not designing anymore, but I have to admit, I'm better at strategy, sales and concept than I ever was as a designer.

I didn't start out with aspirations to run the show, but time helped show me that I wanted to be my own boss.

I don't think I'd do much different if I had it to do over again. I'd maybe have been more aggressive in the first ten years instead is working for the same company, but it got me here so I can't complain.

                              Law school fucking blows, fwiw.

Sometimes it gets really difficult to keep focus on the end game.
