Agreed...but no need to "take her down." Just get close enough to grab her wrist and have another officer distract her. But, they were concerned about a paper cut so they tazed the kid.
What if she had a little speed and agility to her? Maybe some martial arts training. You go up to take the knife and she jams it straight up into your ball sack. I mean if we are going to Monday morning quarterback these guys. I wasn't there so I have no clue what they saw and how she was acting. Sometimes those split second decisions look bad to people that are not on scene. I am a very less is more type of guy but not sure on this on. I really doubt I would have pulled my taser but I am not going to judge these guys.
I love how everyone is trying to figure out what the best thing to do should have been, when the goal was disarm the child with the least amount of risk, and it was accomplished.
People want to speculate on what could have/should have happened, but the goal was reached with the lowest amount of risk, and no harm to anyone. How is that not a win when someone's shithead fucktard psycho child is waiving a knife around at cops like they're going to stab them? This clearly wasn't a child in their right mind, so guessing what could have happened if something else was done is pointless.
Fucking risking getting stabbed by that little shit, and screw risking rushing her and she trips/falls and stabs herself of the cop. The outcome was the best possible one.
Send the bill to the parents for the ambulance, resources wasted, and the raise/damages done to the babysitter's time.
Tasering the kid wasn't the course of action with the least amount of risk, especially if you believe the stuff about her pointing a knife at herself.
The stuff about martial arts is nonsense. The repeated statement that we shouldn't question the judgement of the officers on the scene is the biggest problem in law enforcement today. People who are empowered to ruin lives should be questioned relentlessly.

What's your beef with NPR, because their listeners are typically more informed than others?

Then what is lower risk when she is bailing like that?
Have you ever been nailed with that much electricity? It's extraordinarily temporary.
Zapping the kid while the knife is not pointed at herself is more reliable than hoping you can close the distance before she redirects it at herself, or the officer.
I still see that as the safest solution. I also don't give a flying fuck about someone's brat that knows right from wrong, and still decides to act that way.
I'm sure she'll grow up to leave the trailer park and become a fine addition to society anyways. . . or a mother at 13.
I am fairly certain that if it was your kid that was acting out in some fashion and the sitter "wanted to call the cops to teach the kid a lesson" I bet most of your tunes would change. But, this is dfwm. No children of people here would ever do something like that since everyone's parenting skills are superb.

if the sitter is calling the cops on your 8yr old, you fucked up as a parent long ago.

Without commenting on whether or not this kid getting tazed was appropriate, I do want to say how tired I am of hearing the "I'll do whatever necessary to get home safe at the end of my shift". I mean, I understand and agree with that stance to some extent, but there needs to be limitations.
There is an inherent risk with being a police officer. If you are unwilling to accept at least some risk of injury, as opposed to using the maximum amount of "authorized" force in every situation, then you really shouldn't be a cop.
I am generally the first to say I would taze someone rather than fight them, but even that should be used as sparingly as possible. It just seems today that since tazers are considered "non-lethal", people are much too quick to use them. Considering it is clearly proven that they can in certain cases cause death, the use needs still needs to be undergone as responsibly as possible.
This. Outsourcing your parenting is a great way to teach your kids responsibility doesn't matter.
Welcome to 2010 forward. Hell it probably even started the slide way before that. We need to go back to corporal punishment. This time out stuff is fucking stupid. Kids need to understand that there will be consequences to their actions. When I was growing up my parents could tan my hide, my friends parents could tear up that ass, and my principle and coaches could absolutely make you think twice about having a smart mouth. Kids just do not give shit these days. Why not cuss out your teacher? Oh shit they are going to send me home to play Xbox.
