  • War of 1812

I love history and the lessons it teaches. In 2014 we are in the middle of the 200 year anniversary of the war of 1812.

This war between Great Britain and the fledgling United States began when Great Britain flexed its muscle and shut off US trade to Europe and began impressing US seamen into forced British Naval service which at that time in history was not much better than slavery.

Starting this week will be reenactments commemorating actions around Baltimore.
It will include ships and an impressive fireworks display over Ft. McHenry remembering the Forts resolute resistance in 1814 that resulted in the national anthem. As a bonus the Blue Angels will fly the weekend of the 13th and 14th

This could be a good break for you and your families to put things in perspective and to see that even the biggest bully can be beaten if your determined to stand up for what is right.

Information can be found on this site.

History buffs understand that the thirteen colonies were VERY fractured and culturally speaking VERY different from one another. To this day the cultural differences between someone from South Carolina and Massachusetts is deep...they might as well be from two different nations.

For the Revolutionary war to ever succeed they needed ALL Thirteen colonies to unite...hence that famous political cartoon of the fractured snake with each piece representing the thirteen states.

Much of New England was very much against an all out war and only hoped to gain more freedoms under British rule. When more radical elements began the rebellion very few at that moment had any hope of it succeeding.

Ultimately, in my opinion, it was not the 13 but France, particularly her navy, that brought the British to terms. The naval battle of the Chesapeake followed by amphibious landings and the siege of Yorktown created an undesirable landscape and political outcry at home for Great Britain to continue the war .

I'm really in awe of the things accomplished back then, the bravado of the standard issue soldier, and how bloody a time period it was.

To be fair, I'm a bit drunk right now and may be looking at the entire era through rose colored glasses.
