This excludes the "Well, it is 99.9% black bear, but it has a tuft of red hair on it's ass, and a slightly longer left pinky toe, making it a new species".
The fact is, we know what big animals we have in our forests. There is no room for a giant, upright, ape man to be able to survive for all these years without being caught, shot, hit by a car, etc. There would have to be more than one, enough to be able to find each other, yet we have no hard proof? It makes for fun stories, but it just isn't real.
