  • Seat reclining etiquette when flying???

Being a semi frequent flyer myself (around 15-20 times a year) I have always thought about it as being a potential issue. I will usually see who is sitting behind me and decide if it is going to put that person in a huge bind if I decide to recline my seat or not. I have seen people in front of me push their seat all the way back as soon as the flight attendant sat down for takeoff no matter who was behind them. I will usually refrain from doing so if the person is large or really tall. If I notice during the flight that the person is sleeping and their seat is back its game on though. Just wondering what the general consensus is here as I have heard of people getting into fights on planes here lately when using little devices called "knee defenders".

I paid for it, I am pushing back as soon as the flight hits the air.
Fuck you. We're going to Costco.

I just do it when I want to. Sorry, but it's part of the "joy" of flying. I expect to be cramped and hold no illusions I'm in a cattle car. If somebody wants more space, then pay for the Exit row or bump up in class seating.

Ok, what if you try to and you cant. You look back and there are these little wedge devices in place to keep you from doing so and the person will not remove them???

That person is encroaching on my freedom then, and should remove the devices. Further, most airlines ban them, so that person is in violation of the airline policy.

I have no problem with what the pilot did from the story you're basing this on. Idiot should have removed the "defender" or upgrade his seat.

I haven't see that article. I have seen several about those things though. They scream trouble and confrontation to me.

Passenger put them there or airlines? If the passenger did, just tell the flight attendant. No sense getting into a fight over it. Let them handle it. If they don't call customer service as soon as you land. Get free shit. If the airline put them there, and the rest of the seats are the same way...pick a different airline next time.

Apparently these things are bought by other flyers and placed onto the back of the seat in front of them. It was more this situation I was referring to than the airlines doing it which I have not heard of.

I have never tried but I wouldn't think you would get much out of them.

In my experience there is no seat-back etiquette whatsoever. On my last flight I had a kid wedge I don't know what in the seat pocket, something shaped so that it was protruding perceptibly into my back. I turned around to the parent and said something, and all I got was was a shrug.

I never recline my seat, I find it more comfortable sitting up straight.

                          Yup.

Being tall sucks sometimes. I always try to get exit row, even if I have to pay extra, like some of the airlines started doing recently. Bastards. I generally keep my seat up because it is easier on my back, but I can't fault someone for using one of the microscopic perks they paid hundreds of dollars for. Out of all the annoyances with flying, seats leaning back is near the bottom of the list.

I have got 10,000 miles for my entertainment screen not working.

If the flight attendant is not willing to let you get the service you paid for, complain.
