  • Longevity of Yukon XLs and Suburbans?

    Wife and I have been discussing getting her one of these larger SUVs and paying cash in hopes it will last until 200k miles. (She averages 20k annually)
    I have been looking for '10-'12 models and seeing mileage from 40k-70k. Does anyone have any feedback on a burb or yukon that has made it to 200k? What repairs did you have? Anything high dollar? We had one that was flawless to 97k that Buzzo sold for us and thinking they shouldn't have any problems making it to 200k.

    My wife has a 03 Tahoe Z71 that we got in 2007 with 50k on the clock. It's at almost 170k now and it's been a pretty good truck. I REALLY need to do some maintenance on it, but overall it's pretty good. The water pump leaks/weeps mostly in the winter when you run the heater so I plan to replace it and the belt. The intake manifold gaskets suck and need to be replaced cause when it gets cold they shrink and cause a CEL and rough idle. It needs shocks all around, and the transfer case sometimes throws a code saying to service it but that's just from the servo that's a known issue on these trucks. That's it though, no major issues, never left us stranded...

      A/C controllers, compressors and window regulators are the only real common problems. None of which will shut it down. I'd expect to rebuild the trans some time in the 150-200k range but that's not a big deal.

      If it is 4x4 the front diff will probably have problems at some point, even more so if it's AWD (LTZ, Denali, Escalade). By problems I mean they tend to lunch carrier bearings and it can be very expensive to repair. Depending on options some of the transfer cases also have problems. The regular 4x4 only really has problems if you use it alot, the AWDs obviously get used more so they have more problems.

              ABS module likes to fail after 100K miles. And it is expensive.

                I get one in almost every day. Not a 10-12 model but 2000-2008 all the time. Many have 200-300k on them and still go strong. They do like to leak from the rear main (4.8, 5.3, 6.0) after 120k. Front wheel bearings, tie rods, ball joints, parking brake, gauges, oil sending unit, ac compressor, ac liquid line, blend door actuators, coil (ignition), transfer case modulator (motor) and door lock solenoids are the common issues. Everything else is just like any other car. Maintain it and it will last.
                Good judgment comes from bad decisions and a lot of that comes from bad judgment.

                  I have an 04 Suburban with 5.3L. 168k on the clock and just graduated to truck/towing only duty when I bought my 2014 Mustang GT to daily drive.
                  Only major repair was transmission at around 155-160k miles. This did not have the factory tow package, so it doesn't have an additional trans cooler. I've pulled my race car and small ski boat all over the place and towed a heavy tractor a few times with it. I don't know if all that towing made the trans go out early or what. Or if it was just the fact that I only had the trans serviced once in the vehicles life around 75k miles.

                  I've never done plugs/wires on it, so I suspect it could use those at this point as it does feel a little down on power, but still does well.

                  Around 65k miles or so one of the a/c actuators for the dual climate control gave out and had to be replaced. I think it was around $75 for the repair.

                  I replaced the waterpump probably around 100-110k miles

                  I replaced the alternator some time this year.

                  Didn't touch the factory brakes/pads until around 130k miles or so, then went ahead and did 4 wheel brakes. They lasted really well.

                  Did a 4 wheel alignment on it around 155-160k miles due to some minor uneven tire wear.

                  The passenger window is finicky, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I know the problem is in the harness where it clips onto the motor and put a zip tie on it to keep it tight, but it still acts up. Just haven't felt like messing with it.

                  That's pretty much it for issues. Still a decent looking truck. It's always been left outside, I waxed it once a year or so and kept it washed at least once a month or so and the paint is still full colored. You see others with faded paint on the hoods and roofs, but those people obviously didn't take care of their vehicles.

                  I would buy another, but damn they are so expensive these days. I decided with a new transmission and new tires on it, as long as I stopped daily driving it, it will get me by as a tow vehicle and truck for many years to come. I just got kind of tired of daily driving it and wanted something more exiting for my early mid life crisis LOL.

                    My Mom has a '02 Yukon XL with 197k on it and it's been great other than just basic matianence. Fuel pump went out last night though and I towed it home.

                      I wish I could find a local one priced good so you could check it out for me. But if I go to Houston, Austin, or DFW to buy you would be my mechanic.

                        My mom has an 08 with 110k or so, bought it new and hasn't had any issues.

                          Have 140k on my 5.3 ac intermittent 5k rpm runs makes it work lol. Dash cracked by the airbag everything else is solid.
