  • Value on a new old truck

After 387,000 miles, my 08 Sierra CC is starting to get a little long in the tooth. I'm about to buy a 2014/15 as a replacement. And was wondering what the value on this truck is.
I know that the dealer isn't going to give me anything for a trade in because of the mileage. And the value estimators online generally tell me they can't provide value due to the mileage. KBB.com said it should be $8K-$11k in fair to excellent condition. I'm not sure how accurate that is.
And honestly it's at a point where a lot of the maintenance items are almost due again(tires, brakes, front suspension) There are also some bigger repairs needed(A/C is weak, AFM lifters in #6, exhaust leaks).
There are also a few cosmetic items, mostly in the driver's area from my rump sitting there for hours at a time. The driver's seat, steering wheel and armrest all show wear(the rest of the cab is fine). The truck has never been wrecked and only has a couple small dings, which I think would be expected considering the mileage.

Any educated guesses on where to start with a price?

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

Solid truck. I'd probably go 9k, settle for 7,500.

You'd be lucky to get $6k to $7k mileage like that just scares the shit out of people. But then again there's a buyer for everything.

08 Sierra 5.3L SLT crew cab with 250K and below average condition went through Manheim Houston for $9700. You have to figure that the dealer is going to ask 11-12K on that truck, unless he had a buyer with him at the auction.

The lifter and A/C are going to be your biggest killers, people will ignore the miles if it's running good. I would say to shoot for 7-10K.

This. I would probably price it at 8800 and drop from there till you get a sale. I would put much work into it because I don't think you be adding value to it. You are going to have to find a very specific buyer at that milage and they aren't going to be focused on a nice truck, just that it is a good enough deal to accept the milage.

Duramax or gasser? That makes a rather large difference.

I'd start high and decrease if there is no action.

I'd replace the seat, charge the a/c, add a bottle of Lucas and ask $10k.

Always start high, I had a beat to hell w/ 3rd gear burned out 07 CC 3/4 ton gas Chevy with 180k that I wouldn't give $1k for. Tossed it on CL on a sunday morning for $3500, ended up with a dozen emails and selling it in 2 hours for $3800 to the gypsy scrap dealers.

A bottle of Lucas isn't going to do anything for the lifters. AFM is the active fuel management that shuts down 4 cylinders for fuel economy. They use special lifters on 1,4,6,7(the cylinders that shut off). One or both of the lifters on #6 have a problem and the computer has effectively shut that cylinder off. I tried all of the potential fixes I could find but they need replacement. Thinking like an old school 350ci, I was about to pull the intake and swap the lifters but the I found that changing lifters on this engine requires pulling the damn head. So instead of a intake gasket; now it's a head gasket(s) and fluids. Plus the special lifters are a little bit more expensive. Because of the mileage, I am hesitant to pull the head and just change those 2 lifters. My normal train of thought was to change the whole set.

All that crap for a system that never really saved me any fuel.

That is what my thought was too. It's going straight to wholesale/auction, not even a pass through for a used car check.
