  • Anyone investing in aluminum?

Just wondering if anyone has invested in metals in the last couple of years, but more specifically aluminum. Not really in precious metals as that's a whole other strategy.

I am wondering if anyone believes that the automakers moving to more and more aluminum and continued development will drive the prices of aluminum up

Or they'll just stop selling all our scrap metals to China.

Most people I talk to have nothing but good things to say about you, but you sure come across as a condescending prick. Do you have an inferiority complex you've attempted to overcome through overachievement? Or were you fondled as a child?

I picked up some Alcoa INC (AA) stock @ $11.85 share awhile back when Ford announed they were going to use aluminum in the new F150's, etc. It's sitting at $16.11 share currently.

        Definitely something to consider.

I figure I may have missed the boat but that is great short term return. It wont surprise me to see it rise if the #1 selling vehicle in the world transitions to it...others are bound to follow

I have been replacing some old, heavy gauge aluminum wiring over the years with copper. Does that count?

It's the most common metal in the Earth's crust, and it's easily recycled. Fuck no. The only real cost is recovery and recycling. If you're going to ride futures, ride the right ones. If you're trying to take physical possession of scrap aluminum, and think you'll get rich, you're not going to. You likely won't even be setting up an adequate hedge.

There are better places to put your money that will get you a better return, and cost you less time and effort, like a savings account.

Really? Less than 1%... I would think that a solid investment could beat that.

I am in no way comparing this to precious metals. Just thought maybe there would be some aluminum companies that could see a nice rise in their value due to the possible mass production of vehicles using aluminum. Again just an idea that crossed my mind. I have no idea if it will or won't make a few companies some money.

How can anyone say that investing in an aluminum company/manufacturer is a bad idea?
