There has to be some kind of legal verbiage in a contract or waiver these guys sign to even get in a car. Something somewhere covers gettin out of your car on the track, I'm sure.

From that video, it really looks like he walked into Tonys path.

Why is he driving in these things anyways? It's like a big league ball player going to the minor leagues for fun.

      Awful outcome

The kid should of never, ever been in that spot but ...

I'm fairly certain they have race radios, my guess is Tony was aware of what he was driving into at the crash site.

He put himself into a bad place also, I'm sure he didn't want to run him over but, he wanted to send a message .

That should end all these guys jumping out of race cars and throwning a fit for good.

If you sit on your ass until race day, you'll get rusty.

Bottom line, snapping the throttle whe next to him is what will cause Stewart to be in a world of shit.

It is a miscalculation on both parties. I don't think tony intended to hit that guy, and the other guy didn't expect tony to give him a "fuck you" back and got closer than he thought he was. I've given people the WTF move before when my front end got taken out, but I pointed and made sure the driver was looking at me, from the SIDE of the track.

Why? Because he can. He drives NASCAR so he can race sprint cars, he says. Minor leagues? Hardly.

When you get a pit pass you absolve the racetrack of all injury liability, that doesn't mean the laws still don't apply.

At best they have what's called a raceciever, which is a one way radio for the track to contact the drivers to update them on lineups after a caution, and if a caution/red comes out.

There are 20-something other cars on the track, it's possible it was one of those cars, no?

Bottom line, you change the direction of the car with the throttle. Want to go left? More throttle. Want to go right? Less throttle.

I can understand how they would drive, it's a shitty situation, kid was 20 years old, not that it matters.

There have been many serious injuries and a few fatalities of safety workers at racetracks over the years. Unless the car is on fire you stay in the seat buckled in until safety crews arrive on the scene. That is pretty universal and said over and over again at drivers meetings and this is exactly why.

For sure it's a shitty situation.

If everyone is slowed up you're ok to get out of the car, and in fact I would recommend it. These cars are powered by methanol, which burns with a very faint blue flame that's very difficult to see even at night.

A few bits of information in here has me confused. Several people have mentioned tapping the throttle to go left and that the car got sideways and the back tire hit him. Well that video shows the back end kick out away from him (left) which would send the car into a right turn? And it sure looks like the front tire got him, not the right rear that was further out

I wouldn't call world of outlaws minor leagues. Tony came from sprint cars and he's always raced sprints whenever its been possible with his NASCAR schedule. Kasey Kahne does it too. I'm glad to hear somebody came to and isnt letting Tony run today.

I agree with Darwinism on this one...hot-headed kid runs out in front of a moving race car on a dirt track....what other outcome did he think would happen? It sucks that his injuries were fatal but he put himself in that situation and paid the ultimate price for it.

Pretty much this.. Was interested to hear Sean's thoughts on it also. Shitty deal all the way around, but you can't just go run in front of a race car that is on what could barely be called a "track" to begin with and expect anything good to come from it. It's a shame it cost the kid his life, and this will haunt Stewart in the media and his dreams for the rest of his life.

Feel bad for the 20 year old Ward, and his family and friends. Feel bad for Tony.

Did Tony intend to kill Ward? I seriously doubt it. Ward was wearing a black firesuit, on dirt, at night, in the middle of the track while calling out another driver on a racing incident. Nomination for Darwin award there alone.

Have a bad feeling this will be news crap for a while.
                              Some cars and a bike...

Some say... they have been raced, some a lot
