Dirt tracks are not well lit. The tear offs used reduce your vision further. More tear offs at the beginning of race makes it darker. Its not easy seeing out of a sprint car to begin with. Kid shouldn't have gone onto the track like that.

A slight correction here. The old tear offs that come in boxes of 200 are like this, nowadays there's a product called Racing Optics that are 10 tear offs laminated together, worth their weight in gold.

To be a bad ass. Maybe after a big one you get out just because or if you smell fuel, but you then head straight for the nearest wall or safety worker. This guy made a very bad decision and paid the ultimate price.

They don't stop under caution, only under red. They can't stop, there is no transmission/clutch/torque converter.

Watching the video a few more times, I have a good idea what killed him. I will add the caveat that this is purely speculative on my part, and these are images of my car and not Tony Stewart's

When the tire made contact with him it grabbed him as you'd expect a soft racing tire to do. I have been run over by a sprint car before while I was pushing it, and once it makes contact it's very difficult to pull away, even at pushing speeds. (I was uninjured and only had tire marks across my chest where I let the car roll over me instead of stopping it on my chest.



This is the right rear tire and nerf bar, as you can see there isn't much room there, and the car that Tony was driving has an even taller RR. Just how much room is there?



My hand can span the entire distance, so it probably broke his back/neck.

The tire he was on gets very stick, the tire in my image is as hard as a hockey puck, it'll last a half season, and I only replace them because they stop wearing out. That on is done.
