Going down there for work next week and will have a lot of time to screw off. I'd like to try fishing from the shore but haven't ever done it. Where's the place to buy a pole big enough for the ocean and what's the best method?

just youtube or google surf fishing and you will get several ideas. You can pick up a store brand rod at Bass Pro for under $40 and a decent reel for $50. Get a 12' rod. Also get a piece of 1 1/2-2" pvc about 4 ft long, 45 degree cut on one end, to use as a rod holder in the sand. As far as tackle, just get some circle hooks and spider weights. You can use anything from live mullet, frozen mullet, cracked crab(for bull reds) cut bait, squid etc. I've caught reds, black drum, shark, stingray, mackerel and more just off the shore. This is a very vague post so if you have any specific questions feel free to pm me.

I had a blast fishing off the shore. I will be doing the same at at the end of this month. Friends of mine take a kayak and paddle out a ways cast and come back. I walked out past the second sand bar and had luck, however I would not recommend that unless you want to meet a bull shark. Although unlikely I'd not risk that again. I used shrimp.

Check out Bob Hall Pier. It goes pretty far out, and you can rent all the gear you need and get bait right there. Lots and lots of fish get pulled in off that thing.

I'll assume I can rent gear there too?

              ^^knows what's up^^ but I think 12' is a little overkill. Last time I went down to Port A., I used this rod w/ a Penn Sargus 6000.

Bring a cast net and also get some sabiki rigs. My step-dad thought the sabiki rigs were the coolest thing. I tipped them with some old dead shrimp. I'd throw it near a school of mullet in the surf and as soon as it would hit the water, I'd hook about 4-6 fish every time.
