My wife gets 29/35 on a 17 gl tank in her Fusion.

It costs $3.18 to drive 32 miles (average), so at $3.79, a diesel would have to get 38 miles per gallon to break even.

Formula:
(diesel miles per gallon to break even) = (gas mileage per gallon) * (diesel price per gallon) / (gas price per gallon)

I will stick with the TDI. I can live with my 40-43mpg (avg tank). Plenty of room, comfort, and the torque makes it at least a little fun to drive.

I just hit 20k miles and am at 39.4 mpg since new. I drove a chevy spark the other day for 200 miles and avg 25mpg. Talk about a gutless turd. It wouldnt hold 80mph for nuthin.

My fuel bill is $100/month on my tdi. Sometimes $125. But it's worth the freedoms and piece of mind that a electric car cannot provide at this time.

Seeing some of these MPG numbers makes me rethink the decision to drive the s-10 until the wheels fall off! 22.5 mpg on average and 80-100 miles a day leaves me with a $400-500 fuel bill a month

On my way home from work, an older lady (60ish) gave me a thumbs up from the passenger seat of a newer Maxima. I didn't know what to think about that one. Doesn't seem like a good sign though.

don't know about the electric car thing.....im happy with my TDI, getting close to 50mpg roughly spending about 70-90 a month in fuel. its great car, only wish VW made a TDI small pick up....would buy one in a heart beat.

2011 cooper hardtop 6spd manual all stock. I've found when you start effing with mods on these cars the fuel economy goes to shit, but in stock form with 15" wheels this little turd is a blast to drive and awesome mpg.

Do you hypermile it? My fiancee's 2012 Coop (6 sp) has gotten 34-35mpg avg for about 30k miles now. Of course, she doesn't do a ton of highway driving. Work is only 5-6 miles away, barely enough for the car to warm up.

yea these cars are best stretched out on the highway, but im not hypermiling. She needs to monitor the carbon build up if she only drives a short distance, they gum up quick especially in the N14/N18 motors, and the timing chain tensior, they take a dump fast.

I rented a Ford Fiesta (fully loaded) at a conference in Phoenix. Even with AC on and driving 70 to/from PHX Sky Harbor, I was getting 44.0 MPG. I bet if I had a standard, that would have been around 48.

Still, I have a 50 mile round trip commute (Keller to Coppell) and I've seriously been tempted by a Electric only. But my Scion tC gets 30 mpg and it's paid for and only has 150K on it right now...which means I am good for another 100K
