  • So it begins: My year without gasoline

Well, mostly without gasoline. The wife's Edge and the 66 are dinojuice, but my new daily driver is a Nissan Leaf.

My friend at work is moving to the Philippines for a few years and is one year into the lease on this car so I'm picking it up for him.

I still have the G35, but danielhv is putting a fresh coat of Plasti-Dip on it this weekend before I sell it.

Using round numbers, this car will cost me $200 per month for the payment, and I spend a little over that on gas for my 11 year old car every month, nevermind maintenance and upkeep.

I've talked about electric cars before since I've gotten to drive some Tesla cars (roadster is fast and fun, but impractical. Model S is amazing) and this car surely isn't either of those. It is a nice daily though. Range isn't a problem with a 30 mile (round trip) commute and I have back up for road trips.

I'll go ahead and put my flamesuit on and let y'all rag on me for being some hippy tree hugger hipster. I still don't care for hybrids and I'm aware that with all the batteries, EVs are ecological disasters, but I don't really care about that stuff. I can turn the A/C on while it's in the parking lot with an app on my phone.

So tell me...how does it drive? Is it balls ass slow? When you sit in the parking lot, does it run the AC compressor off the main motor, or does it have some sort of auxillary motor to do that? How bad does it eat juice to sit for long periods with the AC on (doing paperwork, etc.)?

How much does it cost to charge during an average month?

I'd love something like this as I spend $250ish in fuel/mo just going to work and back.

          What's the recharge time like?
Does it take a unique charger or charging station in your garage or is it more like a standard extension cord?

They have an electric a/c compressor and run time will vary depending on ambient temperatures and whatever else you are using. Sitting parked with the headlamps on in a 105 degree parking lot with the a/c on max will probably give you an hour run time or cruising at 60 mph with nothing at all on will get you 120 miles down the road. So under the worst possible scenario figure on 1 hour running time, under ideal conditions double it.

Well, I'm sure there are no gears to change, so he can eat taco's, vape and drive at the same time. Steering with the knees FTW!

It's actually kind of cool: it's balls ass slow with the "eco" button on, but press that little button on the steering wheel and you've got 100% torque at 0 RPM, so it can definitely get out of it's own way.

AC runs off of a separate motor connected to the solar panel in the roof. I've run it for 15 minutes and haven't noticed the battery run down at all.

Less than $20 according to my friend that's been driving it for a year.

Depends. I just plug it in to the 110 in my garage and it takes several hours. (over night) You can do the quick-charge either by hooking it to a 220 at home or at a station and that takes considerably less time.

I know it's not a leaf, but I had a volt for a rental for a while and enjoyed the shit out of that thing. My daily mini crapper gets 50.3mpgs so going into an electric would be almost null for me I would assume.

Now you just need to defeat the speed limiter so you can go 60+ in reverse.
