  • Anyone have experience with BMW diesels?

I've been interested in the (E90) 335d for a while now....have read a lot of good things about them, seem to get great reviews from real people (not just paid rags), etc. Very impressive power numbers (for what it is), and these things are said to get 25-30% better fuel economy than the gasser 335i, and since the gassers run on premium fuel the per-gallon price difference isn't as much a factor.

Anyways, it's about time for something new for the wife....the Edge has been a great little car but its getting some miles on it, and she's pretty much hated having a FWD (mundane) vehicle for a bit now too....so I've been looking around a little bit, and as luck would have it I stumbled on a nice 335d that is a BMW 3-year lease turn-in, only 35K on it, the price is right, and it's a late build 11'....so last year of the diesel with the updates.

I know that some of the 09's and 10's had some issues with some of the diesel emission stuff, but have heard and read that it was all pretty much corrected by the 11' model year.

Wondering if anyone else out there has any experience with them?

That torque curve should be fun (and a welcomed change from the Edge)....

i had a customer that was very much pleased with his. he claimed his gas mileage was excellent as well, and that was his reason for owning it.

it was a 3 series sedan.

that is really all i have.

Turns out one of the guys that I work with has a brother that has one and he connected me over lunch today. He had pretty much the same to say...his is a 09' and he said that early-on he had some issues with the particulate filter setting a code, but it was all covered under warranty and also apparently eventually became some sort of recall, but apparently only applied to the 09 and some 10' models.

This guy is in sales and spends a lot of time in his....currently just a little over 120K, claims to have had no big issues with it, but he said that it goes through rear brakes a lot quicker than his previous car (E46 M3)....like every 25-30K, where-as he's only put front brakes on it twice. Not sure about that one...sounds odd to me. Anyways....the guy was kind of a raver on the car (like a sales guy ). He was telling me about all these guys that have done tunes and DPF/EGR deletes getting major power/mpg increases and how he's planning to do his soon too. Kinda started sounding like the diesel-truck ricers (Affliction Shirt Wearers). LOL!

My wife has a 2012 X5 35d and I have nothing but positive things to say about it. Great gas mileage, and not a problem at all, although we've only put 22k on it....

I was skeptical at first as it's our first diesel, but have no qualms about buying another. We put almost 600 miles on it last weekend and didn't use a whole tank, and this is averaging speeds between 80-95...

Hmmm I did not know this beast existed. I may have to go eyeball them. I love our Rouge but miss the MPG of the Versa we had. Not sure the price offset would justify the end, but hey its only money right?

Unless something falls through, we should be closing the deal on it this weekend.

VW north america told me to only buy diesel from quiktrip, since the other retailers do not have the same lubricity/quality/storage/filtration.

VWNA replaced my entire fuel system for free under TSB, the repair bill was $7300.

                            Update (long read):

So we made a deal last Saturday, but it wasn't the original car we've been waiting on. CarMax had made a pretty strong offer on her old car, and it turned out that they had a 335d in Austin that was pretty close to what we were looking for. They said there would be a non-refundable $149 transfer fee to bring it up here. Before I paid that, I told the sales guy to have someone carefully look the car over....told him I am very picky when it comes to my cars, so they need to pay special attention and note anything at all...especially dings, scratches, chips, verify that it is non-smoker/non-pet, etc, etc. I sent him an email with the list of things I wanted checked...he called me later that day, said they had the manager in Austin look it over, and it passed my list...."it was like a new car".

I paid the transfer fee and the car arrived last Friday night, we went over there Saturday morning to look it over, and holy crap...I was shocked!! This car was literally beat to hell. I counted over 40 door dings on the drivers side alone, they were so deep that many of them had touch-up paint in them. The passenger side had about 20 dings, and there were huge scratches all over the deck lid, like someone had thrown something across it or maybe even strapped some lumber to it or something like that. To make matters worse, it had a busted out rear tail light, and the rear brakes were on the metal...huge gouges in both rear rotors (car only had just over 34K miles on it). When I started it up, the AC clutch screeched (extremely loud) for about the first 10-15 seconds. Nevertheless this was not only all stuff that was VERY noticeable, but also stuff that should have been caught well before it ever went on the lot....the extensive body damage alone made this a wholesale car IMO, b/c it was beyond PDR, it needed paint too. I will say that the guys at CarMax were very professional about the whole ordeal, they promptly refunded the fee and even offered to transfer another one in free of charge because of our trouble. I didn't even have to ask. They were very apologetic, and the manager was obviously embarrassed by the whole thing....he even called me later that night to again apologize.

We decided to go look at another local car that had popped up in Arlington, but before that I wanted to drive over to BMW of Dallas just to see if they had anything. We didn't see anything on their lot, but most of their cars are kept in a parking garage....so I went inside and asked the first sales guy that I came to. I told him specifically that I was looking for a 335d, preferred a lighter color, just not interested in black. He thought for a minute and said - I know that we had a white one about a week or so ago, but I haven't seen it in several days. He went and checked, said the car was indeed still in the system but it had a hold on it with no other information. He got a mgr involved and they started researching it...they eventually found the keys, but couldn't find the car for a bit....then they located it in a place where it shouldn't have been, and they figured it must've been stashed by another salesman, for another customer.

Anyways, they finally locate the car and pull it around....amazingly, it is not only our first color/interior choice, but the damned thing also had all of the option packages we were looking for. Turns out this one was also a 3-year lease turn-in...has 39K miles on it, a brand new set of run flats (got those on the CPO inspection), and the price was right in line with what we were looking at. With BMW, being a certified pre-owned means that the factory warranty is automatically extended from 4yr/50K to 6yr/100K....this car has an in-service date August 2011, so the warranty is good until August 2017 or 100K miles. It also has another year remaining on the factory maintenance (including oil changes).

This is where it gets even better...they asked to see the offer statement on her old car, and without any haggling they matched the deal from CarMax, so that I got the trade-in tax benefit too...the deal was just too easy, so much so that I was skeptical getting into the finance office. To my surprise, the only thing the finance guy offered me was one of those dealer packages that covers PDR, paint protection, and a road hazard policy on the tires. All I had to do was say no one time, and that was it...he even commented, this car comes with excellent warranty as a CPO, so there's really nothing I can offer you extra. I was putting about a 3rd down, and had my own financing through my credit union, however he tells me I can save a point going through BMW Financial, and with the amount I was putting down I also qualified for a special where they will make my first 2 car payments....it's like a rebate. Not a delayed payment start, they literally just cover my first 2 months of payments.

Bottom line - this was hands-down my best ever car buying experience. They made the first offer the best deal, and then didn't try to grind me down with a bunch of bullshit extras. It was a very clean transaction and I feel great about it!

We both love the car so far too...it's got some balls for a little 4-door kraut. It has the Dakota and black interior (sort of a dark orange-ish looking brown leather on the seats)

Glad to hear that they treated you right. Buying a new one is the same way, no haggle, and theoretically you should pay the same price at any bmw dealer for an identical car.
