  • Well looks like we came to an agreement.

Now I have never done any deals long distance. I am in Ks and he is in Ct. How can I protect myself in this sale?

He is saying he can wire the money but how the hell do I get money in my account w/out giving away my personal information and account numbers?!? Lol maybe this is easier than I think but shit it seems like a pain in the ass.

He also said certified bank check... I bank w/ USAA though and can't just walk in and deposit the check. You can deposit normal checks online but not cashier's checks. So then I would have to get it, sign it, and send it in to USAA.

    • on a wire what I do is:

he'll clear the wire with them. get his banker's information. then look up the bank and banker. verify that it's legit, name and number match, etc. At that point you're comfortable that you're dealing with an actual bank.

call them or have your bank call them with the wire information

      they'll wire the funds

I then transfer funds to a separate/unattached account

      and you're good to go

bank check is pretty much the same protocol.

      I prefer wire

That makes sense. So you are saying you move it to a separate account? I only have one savings and one checking account with USAA. I also have an investing account I guess with USAA. Doesn't cost anything to move it to it.

Well I don't have a brick and mortar bank. I use USAA with no physical location. I can't just walk into my bank and cash it. Maybe I could at another bank but I doubt a random bank would let me cash such a large cashier's check. Maybe they would???

Don't you normally wait for those to clear? I thought the bank puts a hold on them until they clear a few days later.

Never had any issues. No holds on them They cashed a 20k cashiers check before But it was from the same bank. Sound like you need to do the transfer.

Yeah, sounds that way. I would like to have the cash like you though. I will see about if I can figure out his bank and see if we have one here. Maybe they will cash it.

                Thanks for the feedback.

Yeah, I have three checking accounts and a savings account. I have some accounts tied to others and a couple that have zero auto access to the others.

it's VERY rare that a bank will retract a wire. most banks' policies don't allow it.

moving to a different account just puts another layer of protection

if he has a branch in your area, you can cash his check at the local branch

                  • Regardless if he does have a bank nearby you, they will still most likely charge a fee or percentage to cash the check since you are not an account holder/member of their bank.

You can accept a wire transfer pretty easily. Just go to your bank and tell them that you need the information to have a wire transfer sent to you. They will give you the account and routing numbers to give to the person buying from you. It is basically the same info that you have given to any stranger that you have ever written a personal check to when you paid for something by check (your account & routing numbers are at the bottom of your check). I'm sure you knew that but thought I would spell it out.

if it's a cashier's check, there should be zero fee to cash it at the issuing bank. I've never experienced one at least.

but, wire is still my preferred

Yes. I bugged him for at least a month and he wanted nothing to do with selling it.
