I was in a similar position 2 years ago... I have a good job, 2 kids, house, wife, etc. and in high school I had a 68 fastback, an 88 coupe 5.0 which was totaled at the Motorplex and replaced with an 87 coupe roller which my stuff went into. I always dreamed back then about what I would do to those cars if I had the money. Well 2 years ago I traded a dirtbike and $1k for my 92 coupe (5.0/5spd 4 banger conversion red with black interior). I brought it home and immediately started working on it... the wife (very understanding, but absolutely hates the foxbody look cause she has no taste in cars) asked when I'd be done with it... I replied NEVER!

One night a few months later she came out in the garage and I'd been working on it for hours, exhausted, sweaty, and half drunk I was just sitting in the drivers seat drinking a beer. She asked WTF I was doing to which I replied "sitting in my time machine remembering all the times I used to do bad shit in cars like this."

I've spent tons of time, money, blood, sweat, energy, etc. on a car that I'll likely never see the money out of in the last 2 years and I haven't really even touched the motor yet... but I don't regret it. It's not about the cost, it's about living the dreams I had 16-17 years ago now that I have the means to do so.

If you don't LOVE foxbody cars, there's nothing a guy like me can say or do to make it make sense to you and that's ok by me. You do what you like, I'll do what I like. The money and time may never make sense to others, but to me... it's worth it. I doubt I'd ever sell my coupe but then again I've ALWAYS wanted a 93 cobra so who knows. Unless I can have both, it'd be a really tough call.

I understand exactly this... and why I want it so bad strongly relates to this post. Other people just don't fully understand.

So here is the dilemma now. I'm basically buying a car but can wait for the right one. I love the above mentioned 91 GT.

About a year ago I had a guy contact me from WV. He said he had an LX he was looking to sell. I kept his contact info and information about the car in my email... almost dreaming in a sense.

Well since I am about to pull the trigger... I said WTF and emailed him. His car is still for sale as he never listed it. Description below.

He is the one and original owner.

          90 LX 5.0 5 speed.
          3.08 rear
          59,xxx miles, original
No sheet metal has been replaced, all original.
Engine broken in on Valvoline dino oil and then changed to Mobile 1 full synthetic. Oil changed every 3 to 5K miles. Only PureOne filters used.
          Absolutely no rust
Hood was painted and blended from hitting a turkey. Still stock hood as damage was not significant enough to require replacement.

          Mods:

1.72 FRPP roller rockers (original equipment included)
FRPP ofroad pipe (original equipment included)
TSW Blade wheels (original equipment included)
          Newtires.(original equipment included)
Air pump removed (original equipment included)
          UD pulleys

He was asking 7500 for his LX before and believe it is the same price. I am getting very detailed photos soon but have a few to share. The car was undercoated the first week he had it. Car has been garaged it's whole life.

The LX is a 12 hr drive where the GT is only 4.

So what do I do? The GT with more miles but KICKASS black interior or go with the lower miles car with gray and the 5 spd?

I almost fully understand... the only issue I'd bring up is paying $9k for a GT... Unless it's all original SUPER clean and a 9/10 I'd pass. Then again, the GT was never my thing... for me it was all coupe or Cobra. I'm on my 3rd fox coupe and love them. If I hadn't spent as much time as I already have on this one I'd sell it and get a Cobra since I've never had one of those. But after doing the IRS swap, full cobra brakes and suspension upgrades I just can't justify starting all over just to have a Cobra unless it was an even swap for one that was pretty clean.

If GT's are your thing then I'd say just do it man. Look over the car A LOT. Take a friend and a flashlight (even in the day time), make sure the motor is COLD when you start it up. Try to be objective, although that's the hardest part when your emotion says to buy it (that's what this is all about man, and the reason for taking a friend). DO NOT be afraid to let it go, there WILL be other cars man, and very likely one you like better later. Never make the first offer, the first liar never wins. If he asks for an offer, ask him what he will take. Don't buy it on the first visit, really be sure this is the one you want for that kinda money... you can buy 2 GT's for that price, and at $9k it's not selling today I'd bet (unless you want to post details and pics so we can have a better understanding of what you're looking at).

Imagine how many fun-loving miles you could have already had in it instead of beating yourself up over it. If you have any regrets afterwards, just sell it. If you regret pulling the trigger later, you might not have the same opportunity.

Unless it's an optical illusion, that looks like a 5 lug conversion as well... I'd go LX and never look back. Take the money you save and put it into either GT or Cobra body kit and be done with it. That thing is clean as hell, and nothing wrong with Gray interior (anything but red). If he's the original owner and has all that history it's a no brainer in my mind man.

All great advice and strongly agree with all of it and had thought of most of it. My biggest problem is that they are far enough away I can't make multiple trips to look at them and cypher on it.

I love the GT's, had a coupe, never had the LX hatch.

I know there will be more so I'm trying to not jump on the gt as I think it's over priced. I think it's around 8k in value. I told him that and he told me not to even come look at it as he would just store it before selling for 8. The car is close enough to you guys I don't want to give out too many details as someone easily could jump on it.

IT is an optical illusion. Those caps give the look of 5 lug. I said the same thing. IT's still 4 lug and he has the 10 holes. They even have the worn out gatorbacks still on them.

LX Hatch over a GT any day of the week. I had a 1990 LX Hatch I was converting to a 5 speed when I joined here. Red with black moulding like that one. It also had black interior. Had that car for longer than most of my other Mustangs. IMO a non GT Hatch is the fox to own, excluding a '93 Cobra of course.

I miss the old 5.0's. I currently have a Z06 but feel naked without a pushrod stang. I agree with talisman, the LX hatch is the best one. I had a 92 notch but had to sell it because of college, sad day. 9k is steep for that GT, but if it's close to what you've been looking for bring cash and don't be surprised if he'd take 8k. Personally I'd bring cash and get the LX, paint the mouldings to the color of the car and stick some ponys on it.

why not look for a 93 cobra if you're willing to spend that on a fox?

If that is the true, why did you pass? There has never been an ad for the car.

I like the black contrast with the molding. I think the solid color looks "cheap"...but many people see it the other way. I really don't think he would take $8k as he told me to just stay at home.

93 cobra that isn't clapped out for under 10k? Not going to happen from corral or 93cobra registry. I haven't seen one in the past year that didn't need quite a bit of work for less than 12k. I'm more comfortable in the $8k range as I don't have cow skin rug money.

Mine was a 10 second daily driven street car for almost 4 years before I got a second car... a/c power brakes and steering, huge stereo system with ps2 and dvd (neat in 2001)... it can be done pretty easily with todays technology...
