  • let's talk about tire chains on ice

Driving on 635 this morning, or more like crawling, this benz comes by at about 40 mph with chains on. My questions are:

1- What is the top speed recommended on ice/snow with chains?
2- How effective are chains on ice?

Just pondering this, as I wait on the pizza delivery guy.

I would be afraid the chains would break or slip off and tear some shit up

I thought tire chains were against the law here in dallas?

That said, I spent 2 months in Watertown NY (snow everywhere and -23) and no one used chains on their tires. Hell, I had a rent-a-alero and didn't have too many problems. But they did plow most roads every morning.

The few problems that I had was when I went on unplowed roads...

In Virginia, it is usually frowned upon to use chains on your own vehicle. If they come loose at all they can grab your brakes and rip shit apart.

1- Most suggest no more than 30 MPH
2- Shitloads more effective than most non studded tires.

We put chains on three squads today. The last time we did it two of the four that had them chunked them and one did some decent damage. I drove my Tahoe all day with traction control and no issues. Only big problem is pushing cars out of the road way and inclines. The damn traction control wont let you spin them up to get moving.

Most of the issue with them coming off has to do with poor installation or poor quality chains. To install them right you need to deflate the tires down to 3-4psi. Install the chains as tight as you can and inflate the tires back to normal pressure. This is how the mechanics @ the city of fort worth installed them on cop cars and they worked great that way.
