  • Going to Philly

I'm going to Philly next week for the first time. Suggestions on places to see/eat/drink, etc?

Pat's or Geno's just to say you did. They are both novelties and not the best in Philly, but worth the time. Eat some scrapple for breakfast. Try a Birch Beer. Drink a Yuengling, anywhere.

Tony Lukes under & near the Walt Whitman bridge.
Lots of cool bars and shit on Market Street. Also you can visit the oldest street/neighborhood in America, Elfreth's Alley. It's over near Independence Hall, which is also a cool attraction. Philly is really a cool place if you appreciate the historical things and old architecture. The people are assholes though.

I was at the City Tavern a couple of weeks ago, well worth a visit. It's a little pricey but you are paying for the atmosphere.

As for Geno's it isn't anything to write home about. I'm pretty sure McDonalds could do a better version. Parking is basically non existent and don't park in any of the convenience store lots, they'll tow you if you walk the wrong direction.

Yard's brewing has a revolution series and you probably won't find it outside of Philly. They are renditions of Jefferson, Franklin and John Adams beers and all are very good. If you do go for a Yuengling at least get it in a can for the novelty. You can buy it in Arkansas now, it'll be in Texas soon enough. I haven't seen cans anywhere but in PA and NY yet.

I got Yuengling in Alabama a few months ago when I was at the US Steel plant down there. So you can add that.

Scrapple: the other other breakfast meat.

They have a huge brewery in Florida and are slowly moving into Budweiser markets. Texas is a little too competitive for them to distribute here though.

                          Geno's sucks blue whale. Pat's isn't bad.

I had a Pat's. They cooked up a sensational cheesesteak with spicy peppers and onions and it smelled oh-so-good. Then before I could stop them, they slammed a huge dollop of fucking CHEEZ-WIZ on top of it. I took two bites of it and all I could taste was a block of Velveeta, so I threw it away. So word to the wise, tell them you want swiss or provolone before they ruin your cheesesteak with gubment cheez, and don't worry about the look they give you.

I went to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, which is where they filmed the "running up the steps" scene in Rocky. It's kind of a thing now for the hipster kids. They run from the bottom all the way to the top as fast as they can, then raise their hands in the air and jump a few times, just like Rocky. The highlight of my PMoA experience was having four black kids, all of them about 10yrs old, pick up gravel from the parking lot and throw it at me as I got out of the car.

I can't think of anything particularly nice to say about my experience in Philadelphia. The rest of the state seemed okay.

One night we did Pat's, then walked across to Geno's and ate again. I liked the bread at Geno's better, but Pat's is the better of the two overall. Neither are outstanding or impressive. Like I said, they are just novelties, and far from the best.

As for Yuengling - if you've had it anywhere south of Nc, it is coming from the FL plant, and just doesn't taste the same. In Philly/NE you know it's coming from the oldest brewery in America.
