FT. WORTH (WBAP 24/7 NEWS) - While the future of a Buc-ee's travel center remains unclear in Corinth, the company is moving ahead with plans for a second location in Far North Fort Worth.
Buc-ee's has land under contract along I-35W near Texas Motor Speedway. Founder Beaver Aplin says he hopes to close on the land this summer and begin construction later this year.
"I wanted to be on 35E and 35W somewhere between where they join in Denton and downtown Ft. Worth," he says.
Aplin says the stores in Denton County are part of a strategy to grow a presence in the Metroplex. The company is currently building its first North Texas store in Terrell, which is scheduled to open this November.
"We're working east, north, west and south to be on all the major interstate corridors in and out of Dallas/Ft. Worth," he says.
Right now, the closest Buc-ee's location is in Madisonville, between Dallas and Houston on Interstate 45. The store in Terrell will be about twice the size of the Madisonville location, with 80 gas pumps.
The proposed store in Corinth would be even bigger, with 96 pumps.
That plan has generated opposition among neighbors who say the city would lose its rural feel. Aplin has encouraged Corinth residents to call police departments in cities with a Buc-ee's and ask if there has been an increase in crime.
He believes he can win over the city but acknowledges the store in the open land near the speedway will be an easier sell.
"I don't want to give up," Aplin says. "Normally, chambers [of commerce] are calling us asking us to come, so the reaction in Corinth is a little unusual."
