Nazi U-boat Located Off Texas Coast

Well, I could be wrong, but I believe this U-Boat was apparently sunk by a destroyer using depth charges. There was a captain that reported a u-boat encounter. A few days later it was spotted by an aircraft which attacked it as well. It was apparently no where near where it was suppose to be. They could never determine if it was the same u-boat, or different ones. I'm guessing it was the one the aircraft attacked, and it survived the depth charge attack, and that's why it took so long to locate.

He did a presentation at an oil and gas conference I was at a few months ago. Obviously the topic was underwater exploration - absolutely captivating. Great speaker and presenter, it was fascinating.

He did a speaking engagement in Dallas a few years ago, but I didn't find out about it until a couple of hours before it happened. I'm sure it was great. I wanted to be an Oceanographer for a long time when I was a kid.

Oh yea, but the Nazi's were never going to go after the United States mainland.

There was a case where U-boats dumped some spies off on the beach to infiltrate our industries and sabotage stuff. If I remember correctly, a couple liked USA life so much, they just settled in. Others were caught.

It was long assumed it was destroyed near where the depth charges were dropped, but I had seen several documentaries where they searched the reported location and couldn't find it. It was theorized that maybe it had been damaged and been able to get underway for a short period before it sank, and the plane that spotted it had in fact seen the U-166 moments before the damage from the depth charges sent it to the bottom. Pretty interesting. I can't tell from the article where exactly it was. But since it took them years and years to find it, I'm guessing it wasn't where they thought. The article says it was off the coast of Texas, but the depth charges were apparently at the mouth of the Mississippi. It must have survived the depth charges. A little confusing.
