I've known the guy since high school and several board members have met him at UFC watching parties. Long and short of it he rear-ended a guy on 114 going 106mph and killed him. Blew a .182 and was convicted of intoxication manslaughter. He's been serving time for over a year, and he's not eligible for parole until the end of 2018.
I never knew the specifics of what happened until yesterday. I'd texted him a few times but, since he had a growing career and a newborn child, I didn't think much of him not replying. A mutual friend filled me in on the specifics yesterday. The guy he killed was a father of two.
I don't quite know how to process this. It's definitely not everyday that you find out someone you've been pretty good friends with over half your life is the subject of a real life horror story. I know if he had killed my sister or my wife I may well see to it that he never made trial. We've (mostly) all made some dumb decisions involving cars and drinking, but it's never been this close to home. All the more reason to keep up with my very limited alcohol intake. Things get real, and got real quick.
