  • Pretty sure I now have a shrimp allergy.

Maybe all shellfish, which fucking sucks cause I love shrimp.

Story goes, I had a gift card to outback, so a few weeks back went for some steak and shrimp. Near the end of the meal I have a lump in my throat that I can't swallow or cough away and my lips feltba little swollen. I thought I may have just swallowed something wrong. It was gone the next day so I didn't think twice about it.

A week later, I go to outback to finish off that gift card with steak and shrimp. Same reaction as last time but a little milder. Thinking it could be just their seasoning or something I decide to go to red lobster tonight and get their chilled shrimp. Same reaction, but about as mild as the last time.

Anyone have an allergy show up as an adult? Having never had an allergic reaction I had to do some reading to match the symptoms and figure out what was happening. I'll go see the doc to know for certain. If it stays mild I'll keep eating shrimp and just suck it up.

Could be a lymph node depending on where. I had a big lump pop up while eating razzoo's delicious crawfish étouffée. It hurt so bad, I didn't finish my meal. It would swell as I would eat and went away after 20 minutes or so but swell back up as soon as I started to eat again . I went to the doctor and was told it was either viral of bacterial and was given a z PAC. That or cancer but it went away and I've been good ever sense

Hmm. The symptoms are gone now, and it's been about half an hour. That'd be good if it's something than can be knocked out, and not a permanent nuisance.

Take a benadryl an hour before eating shrimp.

If you don't think it's life threatening or anything, try eating something other than the potential allergen and see if it aggravates; and then try eating specifically the shrimp, maybe some shrimp cocktail with out all the spices etc and see if it aggravates.

Does cheddar bay biscuits before the shrimp arrived count? Cause that's what I did. The meal was only chilled shrimp. Although, I did have cocktail sauce with it.

I would say it's not likely to be an allergy but

My issues were definitely irritated but spice and zest

Hmm. I'll try the benadryl idea tomorrow. I'll be eating with family so if I go into anaphylaxis they'll be there to dial 911.

My mom developed an allergy to alcohol when she was in her 40's. Just out of nowhere it happened, swelling in the throat and hives. So yeah, it can happen.

Symptoms rarely lessen. I'd think if you had a serious allergy that it would go from mildly present to deep shit (my grandmother had this happen).

                        Have it checked out.

echos my thoughts... I'd get it checked out. You don't want the next time to be much worse

You're flirting with disaster..you've developed a shellfish allergy. The fact that you had throat tightness and lip/mouth swelling is concerning that you could develop anaphylaxis. Just taking benadryl wont be enough...I would recommend having an epi-pen handy.
