  • Unmarked Police Car

    lol

(Reuters) - An Indianapolis woman has sued the city's police department, contending that an order to remove an "Unmarked Police Car" bumper sticker from her minivan violated her rights to free speech, the group representing her said on Monday.

A lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana on Friday argued that Indianapolis police did not have the right to question and make demands of Pamela Konchinsky after pulling over her vehicle earlier this month.

"We contend that the police officers who detained and interrogated our client without legal grounds to do so violated her constitutional rights," ACLU attorney Kelly Eskew said in a statement. "The promise of our Constitution is that these lines cannot be crossed."

According to the complaint, Indianapolis police officers told Konchinsky the bumper sticker would make people think she was impersonating a police officer and could get her shot, before demanding that she remove it from her rear window.

The suit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department spokesman Lieutenant Chris Bailey said the department did not comment on pending litigation.

As much as I agree with you, I vaguely remember a dumbass tv show about a sheriff dept in FL that used green mini vans as unmarked units.

Lots of departments use mini-vans and other types of 'weird' unmarked units. I can't even tell you how many vans, intrepids, neons, etc i've done work on that were used as UC/UM cars.

Same here. The amount of random crap used in surveillance or narc stuff is surprising.

A city in DFW has a white panel van with magnets of like 5 fake companies hanging inside the door. Literally, just like the movies they'll park it somewhere with whatever logo on the side and just post up for 3-4 days until they see what they need. the one i worked on there had a periscope, cameras in the headlights and rear turn signals, cameras with blackout shades & drawstrings on all the windows, and the antennas were in some 5" PVC on a ladder rack up top. Pretty slick!

I was headed to Plano Saturday on the zx10r and in Anna, a nice brand new looking Ford Taurus flew down the onramp and slid in behind me. Normally I'm riding at least a little faster than traffic, but when I looked in my mirror, I noticed a stubby little protrusion from the top of the car I've never noticed before. "Gotta be an antenna", I thought. Better slow down.

After a while, the car eased on past me, and in McKinney someone in a big ass black dually ford came barreling down an on ramp, cut across some thick ass traffic in an unsafe manner, and then went onward.

The Taurus picked up speed, and had all kinds of flashing lights come out of nowhere. If I hadn't noticed that little antenna, I'd have wound up getting a speeding ticket. Never seen an unmarked that looked that slick before.

California had a law that police vehicles be clearly marked. Maybe if PD's weren't trying to be sneaky motherfuckers, this wouldn't be an issue.

"Had" could be the keyword. It also could have been specific to patrol units.
