            It is my understanding that hydrant water is non-potable and not treated.

              That may be correct in some areas, but I can say that many are on the main water feed. I watched them dig and install one single line in front of my buddy's place, and they put in hydrants every few hundred yards. They t'd off one side for the hydrant and the other goes to his house.

                I can see how it would save money to do it that way, only one pump system and one set of lines to dig/maintain.
