    check it out...http://www.snaponindustrial.eu/en/pr...-tool-control/

Anyone every used a system like this or something similar? We are making a major investment in tools and I was told this morning to take it a step further to make sure our brand new tools don't walk away.

Pretty standard in aviation and military. We use a tool chit system or a barcode with scanner.

Do you not have a tool crib there? I would just have the techs bring their own tools...

          That and TC Max..
You remember the stories John use to tell us about the the three chinamen playing Fantan? This guy runs up to them and says, "Hey, the world's coming to an end!" and the first one says, "Well, I best go to the mission and pray," and the second one says, "Well, hell, I'm gonna go and buy me a case of Mezcal and six whores," and the third one says "Well, I'm gonna finish the game." I shall finish the game, Doc.

Having a tool crib is not efficient. The boxes will be located in the lanes for mechanics to work out of without having to walk to get the tools they need to do the job.

I've thought about tool tags, but that's just another tool to keep track of. 3 mechanics will be sharing 1 box but using different tools out of that box at the same time.

Just do a tool inventory after every shift. Maybe have a camera pointed at the box from the ceiling. My work box is completely shadowed so inventory is very easy. But working out of a community box just sounds like a bad idea. They won't take care of the tools as if they were their own.

I would suggest having them use their own tools. Maybe only keep specialty tools in the community box.
