  • Leather furniture + pets = good or bad idea?

Looking at getting leather furniture this go around but I'm concerned about durability. I've got a pretty hyper boston terrier that likes to lay on the furniture. We keep her nails trimmed but I'm more worried about scratches from the dog jumping up and down.

I've done some reading on the web and it seems that nicer top grain stuff scratches easier than the shitty bonded leather. I don't want to spend the extra money if the couch is going to look like shit in 6 months.

Also, getting rid of the dog is not an option

I have had better luck with pets and bonded, my dad has some nice leather stuff and lets just say it is "distressed" now because of his dogs.

We have a bonded leather couch. We have had it for about a year and a half and it is rough in several areas. However, I don't think it is from our dogs jumping up and down onto the couch. I think it is more from our new dog having "the rips" and using it as a spring board or landing zone.

Why even have pets at that point? If you just want something to look at get some art - you won't even have to feed it or pick up shit.

Leather is best if you have a shedding dog. Scratches shouldnt be a big deal.

We've had a bonded leather couch for about 5 yrs now and 2 cats. They have put a few perforations in it, but what pisses me off is after 5 years, the cushions are splitting and coming apart. The bonded crap is flaking off now. I would have thought it would last more than 5 yrs but I guess not.

Maybe if you live in the country and own a bunch of fucking goats.

Soft paws. They are nail caps for cats and dogs. Work great for scratches.

The dog is 8 years old. We tried a couple years back to retrain her to stay off but that ship has sailed.
