  • Kayak incident could use DFWM help

Hey guys, as some of you know I do a lot of kayaking/ fishing trips. Myself my dad and two other guys had been planning a 5 day 4 night trip on the Pecos River in southwest Texas for months. Unfortunately our trip ended last week with the river flash flooding on us due to record setting rainfall and we were forced to abandon everything; our kayaks, camping equipment, camera equipment etc are all gone. We had to be rescued via TXDPS helicopter off the top of the canyon once we had made it out.

I am posting this just to get the word out about our equipment, I know we have a few people down in the Del Rio-ish area and people who kayak/fish etc. If anyone hears of or sees any equipment being found on the Pecos River, the Rio Grand or Lake Amistad please let me know. We are offering cash rewards for the various equipment. I personally lost all my camera equipment in a black Pelican 1450 case (I'm a photographer); however we all lost a significant amount of equipment. We stashed as much as we could in a crevice about 12 feet above the water line but unfortunately the water came up well above that and I have no idea if it is still there or not. Either way we cannot get back to the campsite. We lost two Perception Pescador dark green kayaks, one Wilderness Ride 135 Light Green camo-ish color kayak and one bright red Coleman 14ft Canoe.

I know it's a long shot but I definitely appreciate any and all help and once again, cash rewards will be offered for the various equipment.

    Damn!

I guess asking for pics would be out of the question?

That blows, dude. Nature is a bitch sometimes. I'll keep my eyes open on some outdoor sites.

Damn ... that sounds like one hell of a memorable adventure! I'd just be glad you guys all made it our safe!

I'll keep an ear out, but have no connections to the area or kayaking. Good luck!

We actually eneded up with a few pics and video. All of mine are from my phone, one guy and my dad made it out with their cameras. I lost all of my "professional" photos however, which hurts almost as bad as the equipment itself, it was beautiful trip and I took probably some of the best photos I've taken. I'm kicking myself for not at least grabbing my memory cards, but at the time that was the least of my concerns. I'll post up some photos here in a bit.

Here is a brief desctiption on me and my dads blog, we are working on a comprehensive write up.

Glad you made it out of there, I bet that was exciting. I hear you on your camera, I recently had my camera stolen along with all of my lenses. It's quite depressing.

Really sucks. Are you going to go back at some point and search? That's some crazy shit to be pulled out by helicopter!

Carnival cruise lines, stolen out of the room by room service probably. About $5k worth of glass/camera. I have to start all over again now, that's depressing. I hope Danny didn't have everything with him.

Nope, filed a claim with corporate and they state they could not locate it. Well, not surprising, it's like 5 months wages for one of their employees. Time to buy a D800 I suppose.

Thanks everyone, it was definitely crazy and surreal. It still really hasn't sunk in. Luckily we are experienced and were well prepared with plans for such things or I might not be here typing this; we came very close to being washed away.

We would love too but this part of the river is very inaccessible. We stashed a lot of stuff into a crevice and I imagine some of it is still there, we just don't have a way to get there especially considering we have no kayaks. We were three days into this trip and the river won't be paddle able for probably a couple more days.

They actually called one of the helicopters that was on the way down to the border to come get us. We had been off the grid for a few days so had no idea what was going on till the flight officer explained that a ton of guys were heading down.
