A family member has a 2012 Explorer with 38K miles (2K over warranty of course) and the "power steering computer unit" apparently went out yesterday. They drove it to the dealership and were told it was out of warranty and that it would be something like $2,400 to fix. I know nothing about "power steering computers" (didn't even know there was such a thing), but it seems ridiculous something like that would go out that soon and that it costs that much to fix. I looked online and saw that Ford recalled a bunch of 2011-2013 Explorers due to an issue with the steering gear. The symptoms I read about online sound almost identical to the one in my family member's Explorer.
Does anyone know anything about the power steering computer/module and/or the steering gear in the Explorers? Is the dealership (Prestige Ford) trying to bend them over and screw the %#$@ out of them? That's what it sounds like to me, but like I said, I don't know anything about this issue.
Thanks.
